In a German forum people are talking about Lufthansa planning to bring the 747-8i to MEX.
Is there anybody here who can confirm this rumour?

No but that rumor has circulated before…. most likely it will become reality.
I not 100% sure if MEX is A380 ready, it could be but I don’t know about taxiway clearance however using the 747-8 obviates those problems, it would add some needed capacity using almost the same footprint of an airplane

I believe GRU was due first. Lets see with the next batch of deliveries later this year!

It would be fantastic to get the 748i. I understand LH's MEX flights are quite profitable, so I would not be surprised. Does anyone know how the LH 744 and 748i compare in terms of number of F, J and Y seats?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Wasn't ORD planned to be operated with the 747-8i from the first quarter of 2013? Any updates on that?

Lufthansa operates both the 747-400 and the 747-8i in different configurations.
The most common versions during this winter are

B744: 8F 66J 278Y
B748: 8F 80J 298Y

Last summer it mostly was:

B744: 8F 80C 234Y
B748: 8F 92C 252Y

There are several routes which are currently checked as next 748 destinations. The next is almost certain, but not official, but it is not MEX.

The 744 is always pretty close to Max allowable take off weight on its way to FRA, so the 748 could do better on that route performance wise due to the high elevation of MEX.

Yes it's official:

LH chief in Mexico said that as soon as the AICM and DGAC certifies the two positions they'll bring it here.

Maybe by late summer we could have LH B748 here.

Good to see an A321 in the picture of the article.

That is good news for MEX. Congrats.

And it shows again that the media knows where the airplane is sent to before employees of LH knows it

Well, at least one LH employee knew...

This would explain why I was able to select 18A in Y for an upcoming trip. Should be a nice forward economy cabin with only 3-4 rows.

The article also mentions that Lufthansa Cargo has requested authority to start MD-11 cargo service GDL-FRA.

Does anyone have an idea how long certification from AICM and DGAC might take? Given the current loads on the MEX flights, LH might want to start using the 748 sooner than late summer as posted earlier on this thread. Besides, if I understand it right, delivery of the next frame to LH is due very soon.

More good news:

AF is making some pressure to fly the A380 to MEX. Gilberto López Meyer, the current General Director of the airport made declarations saying that he is "open" to talk and, I assume, make arrangements for AF to fly with the whale jet to MEX. Let's see just what happens...

I just posted something to the affect of LH wanting to launch A380 service instead of the 748i on a fresh post with articles in Spanish. Additionally, AF is also on the record as wanting to pursue the same thing. Mexico City could see A388's from both carriers by 2014. Link to that thread below (with 2 articles 1 - AF only and 2 - AF & LH intentions).
