Is this a one-off substitution, or is the 744 back on LAX-NRT? I was on this same flight last week, and it was a 77L.
(Side note: A DL 77L took off around the same time as the 744, but apparently that is Flight 16 LAX-ATL -- not sure if that one is usually a 77L or not.)

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 1): That one IS usually a 77L, as it's a continuation of SYD-LAX.
DL16 leaves for ATL around 8:30 in the morning but today's flight was delayed by nearly 4 hours since the inbound from SYD was late by 4 hours. Anybody knows why it was delayed?

Actually today's LAX-ATL (DL16) flight was operated by the 77L that came in from ATL as DL110 around 10:50 (scheduled at 10, so a delay on this flight too). Normally the LAX-ATL portion of DL16 is operated by the 77L that comes in from SYD the same morning however, because of the delayed departure from SYD they swapped aircraft.
Looking at tonight's LAX-SYD (DL17) it already show a delay of 4 hours!

Today on 2/1 LAX-NRT was actually scheduled as an A330-200, but was flown with a 744.
Why? I have no idea. However it was a one-time substition. Plus there are a lot of aircraft tied-up with charter work for the Super Bowl which leads to widebody aircraft used on extra sections or being repositioned.

It could have been a tech issue, I don't know. The most likely answer, though, is weather. The east coast of Australia took a battering from a tropical storm last weekend, with OOL and MCY closed, and BNE and SYD reporting significant delays/cancellations.

Quoting cyberual (Reply 6): There was a DL777 with both of its engines opened at the DL Hangar near Sepulveda Blvd. Maybe something went tech?
