Virgin Blue Will Acquire AN Int'l Ops

Just a wild guess but Branson is desperate to serve Aus, and Ansett Int'l couldn't be a better match - Virgin Atlantic fly from Heathrow to LA, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpar (Malaysia codeshare) and Japan (OK it's Narita but anyway). Ansett Int'l fly from Sydney to LA, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpar and Japan (OK it's Kansai but anyway).

So he'll fly direct to Sydney (and Brisbane) via the #1 stopover choices on the Kangaroo Route to link up with a wide range of Virgin Blue domestic destinations in Aus. The two fleets even match (747-400s). And wait for it, there's Singapore Airlines (49% owner of Virgin Atlantic and owner of Ansett's 747-400s) in the background easing things along. My god, a round the world airline flying to Aus in both directions via (take your pick) Hong Kong, LA (with the option of SFO too, VS already fly there and the SYD-SFO rights haven't been taken up by any Oz airline), KL, Japan...with regional feed at both ends (Athens, Nice, Brussels into Heathrow)(god knows where in Aus into Sydney and Brisbane).

All for the price of four or so international licenses from a bankrupt Aussie domestic airline that no-one outside Airliners.net and Oz itself has ever heard of.

British Airways are going to go bananas if this happens - Virgin round the world, across the Pacific, onward rights from HK to Aus? Poor Rod Eddington. This is going to be WILD.

Well, I'm not sure.

But Virgin Blue begins to fly International routes from/to Australia, instead of its original plan to stay focus in the Australia (and possibily trans Tasmania), they might consider to join STAR (if AN announced bankrupt and dumpped Star).

If Virgin Blue joins Star Alliance, I think this might raise the possibilities for Virgin Atlantic to consider joining Star Alliance.

The star alliance is not for them

The only option is if they start a full-service airline, possibly under Virgin Atlantic. Then Star membership could be on the cards.

There's no way a discount carrier such as Virgin Blue will be flying to Hong Kong and Osaka. After all many of their cost savingas are based on their common fleet - all 737s. I would be surprised to see this changed.

I see Virgin Blue ramping up their domestic routes considerably (using ex AN 733s at first???), Qantas taking the pick of the regional routes perhaps by acquiring Kendell and Hazelton and then SQ starting a full-service trunk operation with Virgin Atlantic, possibly keeping the Ansett name. Perhaps they would start just with the 20 A320s and build from there.

Still too soon what'll happen. Right now feelings seem so raw, particularly around anyone related to the Ansett community, it's hard to tell what there'll be support for, or not, whatever brand or fleet metamorphasis takes place.

But while the political slugging is still going on either side of the Tasman, does seem like Virgin and especially Singapore Air have been playing both sides, and maybe getting away with it because of this political sentimentality and to some extent nationalist rivalry.

It's very messy, and to me not at all clear that in the medium or long term, VS or SQ will come to be that highly respected by either country's traveling public. At least not unless and until there's some greater sensibilities shown and focusing on the customers, rather than just constant high-level corporate playmaking so much of the time.

AN Int'l cannot be wholly owned by Virgin. To secure int'l landing rights out of Australia it would have to be 51% Australian owned.

There is much speculation as to what may happen to Australia in the coming days/weeks. This was exactly how things were unfolding in Canada a few years ago when the Air Canada/ Canadian / American Airlines fiasco debuted.

Basically, Australia will end up with a 2 carrier policy again. With just Qantas being the only international carrier for the time being.

Is it that no one learned from the Canada experience that we're seeing a whole lot of bafoons doing exactly the same thing our governments did a few years back?

No matter what the Oz and Nz govts say now that "airfares wont' rise". It will. And with only one major airline running some routes, airfares might go up as high as 100%. All the governments will say are : "Oops, we made a mistake. Oh well".

Like Tullamarine mentioned, DJ will never be able to operate international under their own AOC, because they are a 100% foreign owned airline, and under Australian law, an airline with international rights has to be owned 51% by Australian investors.

Who owns the 51% of Ansett International at the present time? News Corp isn't it? How does one know if News Corp is willing to allow Ansett International operate under the Virgin banner??

The key to Ansett International is with whoever owns that 51%.

And something I wish to comment on about the New Zealand government in this situation. It was their company, in Air New Zealand, which is greatly responsible for the current problems with Ansett, and for their government to turn around, and say that us Aussies (with Ansett) are on our own, stinks of a brash, stubborn attitude. Let us remind those Kiwis, that when their nation is invaded, that they too will be on their own!! Hell!! They got rid of their Air Force; in the process relying on us. So where is the comradery on their behalf?

It's hard to work out the chaff from the crap and vice versa from all the media reports. But your points are entirely valid, I am tuning out from some of the bickering going on and blatant heresay at present.

As for the Kiwi's? Well I know of at least one 'e-mail' campaing started which encourages people to forward the message onto everone in their address book. It's an anti - ANZ, anti NZ products e-mail requesting people to not buy NZ made products or fly ANZ due to the treatment of AN. If it receives media attention it may spark some Oz / NZ rivalry that may cause problems. (Who knows?)

I am unsure who export's what % of stuff to whoever but I could imagine a consumer led trade war would probably hurt the Kiwi's a lot more than us. The mood / sentiment amongst people is really starting to show.

Nations invaded? Nah... What we would we want? (lol) Mate, national sentiment can be volatile anywhere in the world when a national Icon is threatened because of others incompetence - ANZ & your government.

Trade war, nah - just expect to see NZ Products being left on the shelves. Including F&P.
