Taag Angola To Buy 3 More 773's From Boeing

It looks like TAAG is ordering a further qty 3 777-300ER's in a deal worth US$895 million according to the article below. What is TAAG going to be doing with the 3 new orders along with the 2 already in their fleet not including the 3 options (likely for future route expansions)? Commenters related to the article seem to suggest that TAAG should be seeking US approval to begin services to Houston in providing non-Oil traffic business into IAH to complement Atlas Air / Son Air's "Houston Express" Oil Contract service. Could Angola be positioning itself to petition traffic rights into the US? It seems that the EU has already approved operation of TAAG's five Boeing 777s and four Boeing 737-700s into the European Union likely with foreign air crews.

Three new aircraft of type Boeing 777300 ER, valued at three billion and 500 million kwanzas each, will be purchased, up to 2016, for the Angolan Airline TAAG –, reported today, in Luanda, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, Daniel Pimentel.

The Manager gave the information at the end of a meeting that the Transport Minister, Augusto da Silva Tomás, held with the President of the American company General Electric (GE), Jeff Immelt.

Pimentel Araújo explained that the contract signed with Boeing, the March 27, 2011, provides for the purchase of three more planes, the first will be delivered in may 2014, the second in December 2015 and the third in March 2016.

The PCA of TAAG added that the company still plans to acquire three more aircraft that, in principle, are scheduled to be delivered in 2019/2020, but that can be received before, if the need for growth and expansion of the company.

If that's correct, DT will have 11 777s. That will be a larger Triple 7 fleet than KQ, MS, and ET. With a new airport under construction in Luanda, it's interesting times ahead for Angolan aviation.

Very little. In TAAG's ideal world, SonAir will stop the charter flight and DT will replace it with scheduled service on its own aircraft. This will not happen anytime soon, because while DT has their IOSA, Angola's CAA is completely corrupt and worthless. Since the U.S. rates countries based on the CAA and not individual airlines, TAAG is in an unfortunate situation.

Additionally, while both SonAir and TAAG are owned by the Angolan government, I can't imagine that SonAir would be willing to simply hand over the route to TAAG after spending a bunch of money to refurbish those two 744s. Only time will tell!

So where would they fly these besides Houston? Have they launched flights to Brazil, I remember there was a discussion on here that they were considering it. Also, could we see them expand in China? (via some Asian stop)

That's what I got from the article: Its 3 77W already on order will be delivered 05/14, 12/15 and 03/16; the 3 options are likely to exercised with delivery in 2019/2020 - although this is not an actual order yet.

The article is basically confirming the delivery dates of the three aircraft on order as well as saying the options are likely to be taken up. Badly written/translated title by the looks of it.

Not quite. Not sure about MS, but here is the breakdown for ET and KQ for the year 2016:

ET:
6x 772LR (5 today, 1 more later this year)
2x 773ER (delivery in 2013+)
6x 777F (2 today)

KQ:
4x772ER (all in service today)
3x 773ER (starting in 2013)
2x 772LR (starting in 2014)
4-5x 772F (starting in 2014)

But one thing for sure, DT will have one of the largest 777 fleet on the continent and those birds will represent a larger fraction of the overall fleet.

Both and more. I am still surprised that they have chosen such a large aircraft though. Cargo may be the reason?

One comenter below the article said that TAAG should not "go back" to flying turboprops instead needed E 190 jets for smaller destinations. Angola is made for turboprops most cities are withing one hour flight from major cities and modern turboprops are far more efficient at one hour stage lengths.

The only reason they fly 2 weekly because they're not allowed to fly more to LAD (they would like more traffic rights). Moreover, sometimes they've to codeshare with DT in order to get permission to fly to LAD.

I think they will increase frequencies to current long-haul destinations first, and then may possibly expand to more. However, if TAAG plans to expand to other destinations, they need to make a lot of changes to succeed. It will be hard for them to rely on strictly local traffic outside of Lusophone destinations, so they must codeshare to feed their flights (AF at CDG, BA/VS at LHR, LH at FRA, IB at MAD, etc). Additionally, they need to partner with other airlines' frequent flyer programs. Without doing this, they will remain an airline that simply transports the Angolan diaspora in and out of Angola.

I'm sure LHR-LAD will go 3xWeekly soon, and i'm IB started LAD so BA can "fuel" more passengers via MAD.

TAAG also flies to HAV, DXB and PEK.

You're right. Other airlines like Air26, SonAir, and Fly540 have realized this too.

Haha literally every airline flying into LAD has a TAAG code its flights (government mandated). Only in Angola!!
