Truly the end of an era. One of the best looking planes ever made, with beautiful lines and a stunningly sleek look to it. Noisy as hell, climbing like a rocket. Gorgeous.

I have loved every moment of the times I have been in and around that plane.

The "Russian 727" indeed is a beautiful plane, just like the one it was modelled after. Actually I am surprised to read that they still made one from time to time until now. Loved to see them here at FRA, now its all boring A320/737 from Russia.

I was surprised to read it is only good for 45,000 hours, 80,000 with upgrades. There are DC-9s with way more hours that that, not to mentions A LOT more 747s.

Well, the TU-154 has much cooler wings. Down-swept (anhedral) and with a very cool swept-back angle (no idea what the tech term for that is). It's also a very fast plane.

Glad I flew one a couple years back in Uzbekistan, also got the chance to see an IL96 at TAS, what a stunning four holer. My TU154 had seen better days, seat broken, no windowshade, ect, still a fun ride, glad I had the opportunity.

Actually full production stopped in 1997. They had about a dozen white tails and unfinished fuselages lying around at the factory since of which they finish and deliver one every now and then. Theoretically there are also a handful of Il-62s and Yak-42s which could be finished and delivered.
Since 1997 they slowly finish these fuselage and deliver them mainly to military operators, of course the Tu-154 is not a current aircraft anymore. Even in Russia it's hard to find one to fly on as passenger and they are scrapping already some laterbuilts.

A reason I have really lost my interest in Aviation is the lack of planes like the TU154 and its other russian brothers flying around anymore. I miss the days of smokey loud dc-8s, Tristars.. all different shapes and noises. Now its a320/737 airbus/boeing .. 2 engined same shaped dullness topped off with the worst liveries in history being created.

I haven't browsed the ANET galleries in for so long and I used to spend hours on them.

Amazing how slow the progress on these has been...maybe an accounting thing not wanting to write off the unfinished frames? With the progress it seems like they only have one guy building the whole plane!

True... you could tell a Tristar just by the sound of the RR's starting. And the smoke. Ah, things just aren't what they used to be.

I've always wondered about the 154's four wheel main gear. Is it that much heavier than, say, a 727? But the 154 is a beautiful plane.

IIRC it had four wheel main gear because of the poor runway conditions at most Soviet airports at the time.

Wing Area: 153m^2 201.5m^2 Significnatly more

OEW: 36560-46700kg 50700-55300kg ~40-20% more
Payload: 40440-48300kg 47300-48700kg About same in later versions

Max cruise 0.9Mach (=531kn@30Kft) 527kn) Seems 727 is faster

Both are amazing performers. Looks like the 727 was a bit more sporty, the Tu-154 a little more tankish.

Hah right on, We used to get sometimes only 14 or 15 flights a day for a London airport but the mix was incredible. Aer Turas DC8, DHL Convair 580 to start the day.. Manx ATP.. British Midland dc9.. the L1011'S from Caledonian.. Few Monarchs and Britannias thrown in. Some SD360 or fokker 27 as the late cargo flights. Now its just airbus airbus boeing airbus.. even the old cargo flights are covered by boeing boeing airbus airbus zzzzzzzzzzz.

Gave up parking up at the airport and watching planes take off and land. Just tedious now.

Some of the sportier take offs I've seen from the TU154 have been the most rocket-like of any type I've witnessed (perhaps on a par with an empty MD-11F)!

Vastly. The original Tu-154 (no letters) had a weak wing, old NK-8 engines, older avionics, less fuel, less seats, etc... then came the Tu-154A, the Tu-154B, Tu-154B-1, Tu-154B-2 and finally the current Tu-154M. During the course of the 70s and 80s all Tu-154 and Tu-154A were upgraded to a B standard. The Tu-154M is a whole different animal. While Tu-154Ms can still be found, even as passenger carriers, finding an airworthy Tu-154B is all but impossible unless you count military ones. The only passenger Tu-154Bs left are the ones with Air Koryo as far as I know...
