Hello Everyone
I know there is a rather long thread about the cabin retrofits happening at UA, but I wanted to check specifically about the international 763's. At the end of last year I flew one from IAD-ZRH and while the First and Business cabins were nice, crossing the threshold into Y was rather depressing! Are there any plans to refit the 763's with new bins/seats and IFE? Unlike some of the competitors, there are at least IFC screens in the seatback, their quality isn't very good.

The three class 763s and 744s are in similar shape, remodeled First and Business cabins with no change for Y. We can debate their reasoning for not including Y but at this point the argument is mute. The three class 763s and 744 will probably be replaced in the next 3-4 years, by 787s and A350s, which means they're not going to make further investment other than adding WIFI.
There will be 14 767-300s and 16 767-400s in a modern two class configuration with 777 style interiors, AVOD throughout and lie flat Businessfirst seats. Those aircraft will carry on with UA for many more years. The 21 three class 763s are, at some point, going to start being phased out in favor of new 787-8s. That will be a dramatic improvement, and hopefully is no more than 3-4 years away.

the UA 767-322's will be getting Internet and new seating and will be replaced by the 787-9 series airplanes at some point but no time in the immediate or even Near future.

Source? The IPTE 763s were slated for replacement by 787-8 starting in 2016 from the original pmUA order for 25+25. No mention has been given about new seating for Y in the 3-class birds, and I doubt we'd see anything other than WiFi added at this point. 20 of the 21 IPTE 763s were built in '91-'93, they won't be sticking around much past the quarter century mark.

Personally, if I'm in Y, I'd rather be in one of those older 767s with 2-3-2 across than a new 787 with a cramped 3-3-3 seating and narrower seats and aisles. Even though UA didn't update the overhead bins in Y on their 767s (they all got new carpet, seat covers and bulkhead coverings in economy) it's still a very comfortable Y product. Seat comfort and space trumps IFE for me any day.

Currently there is no source for the 763s to be replaced with the 787s out of commission for a while. The PMUA 763 do a lot out of ORD and IAD to Europe that we all sort of take for granted. It will take a lot of new metal to replace them.

Personally I'll take the 787 on longer flights.
But you can't -- they are grounded. The configuration of the 787 in Y is rather depressing. Even E+ looks cramped.
