Phase 1 of the BHM Terminal Modernization Project is nearing completion, and here is a link to photos of the new interior spaces-

http://photos.al.com/4461/gallery/bi...ional_airport_expansion/index.html

Yes, that is a whole lotta white on the interior walls and ceilings (a point that was criticized when the initial architectural renderings were made public), but I expect a warmer and less seemingly "Space 1999"-inspired color palette will be adopted once the "new" wears off a bit.

Wow ... I liked it the way it was. Did it really need work?

It has ample gate space, vendors, baggage, etc and a mini-walk to the rental cars. What more could you want? More flights, I guess; but the building was fine.

I love long German words like 'Freundschaftsbezeigungen'.

As did I. The most recent (1993, I think) cosmetic renovations were aging with reasonable grace. I especially will miss the quirky-but-distinctive "moon surface" embossed panels that used to line the edge of the roof on the exterior of the building.

According to both published sources and personal sources of mine, it did. While the terminal had been cosmetically refreshed, the mechanical systems behind the scenes were the original ones installed in 1973 when the main terminal was built and were nearing or past the end of their normal service lives. Also, a prominent feature of the new terminal is a single consolidated security checkpoint complete with full-body scanners that replaces the separate checkpoints for each of the concourses which used walk-thru metal detectors.

No question the work was needed, and will take BHM well into the next 25 years or so. I like the nice touches in the gate areas, i.e. the power and USB hookups at each seat.

Question is, with these new gates being completed what is the long-term plan for "C"?

As I understand the plan, once the "A" and "B" concourses are complete all carriers will move there and during Phase 2 "C" concourse will undergo a similar but not quite as extensive renovation that will include demolition of the rotunda.

And it sounds like the result will create a glut of additional gates which will sit idle. I would think 4 or 5 gates from C would be all that's needed to accommodate current and future demand, and just extend C out as needed to take care of any unforeseen increases.

And I will miss the rotunda, made a lot of trips in/out of there the last 25 years..

Everyone fits in C without too much trouble at the gates now; it seems to me like the project is already a little overbuilt. I understand that there's a certain amount of civic pride associated with an airport of a certain size, but that costs money.

That said, with regard to the finishes, architecture, etc. rather than the size, I think, like DTW, they did a good job of making a terminal that looks nice and is functional but is not an expensive Taj Mahal (like IND).

Delta doesn't fit in its gates on C right now and many of its regional jet flights board from the Tarmac. That will no longer be necessary. When complete, the new terminal will have the same number of gates as the old terminal. This isn't an expansion, it is a rebuild. Moreover, security will no longer be bottlenecked, there will be suitable post-security dining options, and FIS equipped gates for charter flights to Mexico and the Caribbean. It was needed and done with an economical budget.

Anyone know when the new gates officially open?

As I was on the commuter bus recently, the BAA employees still say that LH is still going to have a non-stop Germany flight in BHM for Mercedes. I always get a good chuckle from them.

If they are having FIS, that will be the easiest job in the Federal Government besides CBP in SNN.

Lufthansa is not going to start flights to Birmingham. However, CBP agents are already assigned to BHM. It is an international airport. CBP simply did not have a facility in the old terminal. There are hundreds of international airports in this country with CBP agents that do not see many, if any, daily international flights (private or airline).

This looks really nice. The original building looks older than 73'. And in some ways this new section reminds me of the Terminal A renovation at SEA cira 2004 or so. But it looks very comfortable.

I am surprised that Homeland Security is not screaming about all those windows overlooking the ramp. Geesh, someone may actually see an airplane. According to the TSA, even looking at an airplane is suspicious behavior.

Congratulations to BHM, the new terminal looks great, but as mentioned, the white is a bit much in the ticketing area, the silver beams offset the white in the gate area. EWR Terminal A could use a redo but I'm not holding my breath. Besides I travel from TTN and sometimes PHL now.

Not really. When I first hit BHM in 1987 it certainly was a dump, but after the '93 renovation and subsequent changes it was actually rather nice. The central security point is certainly long overdue IMHO..

Congrats to BHM, it looks very nice!

I did a quick look at airport stats and BHM carries about 140% more passengers than HSV. That's a big difference, but not as much as I had thought it would be. Also looks like WN is pulling BHM down a bit, as WN was down 9.6% YoY 2012 to 2011.

http://www.flybirmingham.com/statreports/Dec2012.pdf

http://www.hsvairport.org/rc/stats_hia.html

And BHM ended up down a respectable -1.3% overall 2012 vs. 2011, versus -6% here in HSV.

BHM needed a few fixes, I'm not sold on the cost of new terminal however. Current ops are wide, spacious, etc. However, food vendors and TSA is a nightmare (better show up 90 min prior for a 7AM flight on a Friday) and. I think they just really needed to add a TSA area, revamp restrooms and a gate or two. Oh well, someone else is paying so might as well do it up! I hope the Car Rental is staying put - one of the few airports you can walk to the rental area.

No Chick-fil-A, not even the one at MCO or the one that used to be at Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio, is open Sundays. Company policy.

That said, the new terminal looks impressive.

Airport terminals are the new cathedrals.

I really like the look of the terminal from the pics. A lot of similarities to the new terminal here at YWG, especially the gate area. Lots of natural light. I think anyone travelling through this terminal is going to be very happy.

I agree. Since the late 90's, I have made regular business trips to a town near Birmingham and have always been pleased with the airport. Clean, roomy, easy in-and-out, it's a fine gateway to Alabama.

From what I'm told by some WN agents I know, BHM will go to 15 daily flights this spring. They are worried because under 12 flights a day and the station can be outsourced? There is also a rumor that WN will strata BHM-ATL flight as well for the 05:30 time slot?

I'll believe it when I see it.
