GNV Begins Effort For NYC Service

Well we talked about DAB recently and how close they are coming to landing JetBlue service to JFK. Thought I would switch gears since I noticed GNV was making its own effort.

According to this press release, Gainesville Regional Airport (FL) is reaching out to the community for help in securing nonstop service to NYC with LGA being their second most popular destination only to MIA (which is served nonstop from GNV). Data from the Boyd Group suggests that an average of 70.8 daily pax are NYC bound from GNV (you could fill a CR7 on that).

So what does everyone think? Could GNV justify it? Could GNV justify it over DAB?

Possibly, but then GNV is a fairly easy drive to JAX, MCO or DAB.

Since DL, AA and US already have a presence with flights to hubs, it may be possible to get some extra usage out of facilities and equipment.

However, when DL tried non-stop TLH - JFK a few years ago (similar catchment area profile with major universities, etc) it disappeared quite quickly. The fact it was a CRJ did not help, and I heard a lot of complaints about the length of the flight on that specific equipment, so a CR7 may be more palatable.

I admire their initiative but I can't imagine airline route planners are just sitting around all sad and lonely, thinking "I wish somebody call us with an idea of where to fly" - I suspect virtually every FL-NYC pairing has been considered to some extent by somebody, and if there was money to be made some airline would be making it right now.

And I love these daily pax stats as much as the next guy, but just because 70 people fly between GNV-NYC each day doesn't mean that they'd all pay a premium for a non-stop flight, or that they all want to leave at the same time, right? (I know there are other variables involved, like how many people are going to JAX for NYC trips but would fly from GNV if a non-stop was available, but still it seems like GNV is very, very on the edge in terms of requiring N/S service.

There's a Tim Tebow/Jets joke to be made here but I'm too lazy...

Personally I feel that DAB should see it before GNV. DAB is meeting with B6 early this month which is within that 60 day time frame that was mentioned in another thread. At least DAB can support mainline service on a year round basis. Clearly GNV can't.

I can see DL doing an LGA section from GNV only since they have a hub there now, so you can combine the O&D with the connecting pax, but I can't see it supporting anything more than a CR7.

How awesome this would have been for me back when I was a Gator!! I always had to drive down to MCO to get home for the holidays! But I just can't see this service being a big money maker.....

I think you misquoted, but I do agree to a point. As someone who lives in the NYC area (Long Island) I find JFK more accessible than LGA or EWR. Even from the city with AirTrain it's so easy. Costs much less than a cab too.

However according to the article the 70 pax a day are actual GNV to LGA passengers, not GNV to NYC in general.

No, it's 70.8 passengers for the whole NYC metro area.

I doubt it's a viable route. Too long for a 50 seater and too thin for a larger RJ. If larger markets like TLH and PNS can't sustain flights to NYC, I doubt GNV can.

My mistake.

You know, I'm pretty sure MLB sustained NYC service to LGA and JFK for a couple of years with DL Connection, but that was before the 750 mile rule that Delta took on recently so they used CRJ 200s
