Qatar Airways Network Suffers From 787 Problems

The impact of Qatar Airway's grounding of the 787 can be felt in the network, as it forced QR to go 3 weekly to Chicago instead of daily. Chengdu, due to start in a couple of weeks, has been postponed indefinetly.

In addition QR already cancelled one of its 5 dailies into LHR well into the end of May.

Doha-Hong Kong will be 1 daily 77W instead of 2
Doha-KUL 14 weekly instead of 21 (one daily will be 77W)
DOH-SIN daily 77W

I think those are significant changes into the airline who focuses a lot on Asia. Mr.AAB will not stay sober for long. I think we will see a few more 77W ordered or A330's to fill in the gap. QR gambled a lot on 787 and cannt afford the same to the A350 program.

even if you order those planes, you don't get it immediately; therefore, this is not a shortterm solution.

I believe this is a case of cancelling where multiple frequencies are anyway available while upgauging capacity on the remaining frequencies, thereby freeing up airframes. I do not believe these are the worst performers in the network. If QR were to NOOP stations with single daily frequencies, then these stations would either becomes less than daily or go temporarily offline altogether. With the current solution, QR retains daily frequency to KUL SIN HKG while trying to minimize capacity impact by upgauging remaining frequencies.

Qatar Airways unfortunately were relying heavily on the B787s for the major expansion program which was initially designed for 2009-10. This mainly included increasing frequencies to a variety of points and freeing up B77Ws to open new routes. With the B787 already delayed for 3.5 years and from what it's worth things are kind of heading nowhere now. Some decisions have to be taken now.

Speaking specifically of QR, their regional expansion has not been affected thanks to their A32S fleet enabling them to expand to a lot of nearby places. It is their expansion in Europe and Asia which will take a hit big time wherein their rivals have already expanded there. In their bid to catch up with Emirates in terms of destinations and network density, this is a bad blow for them.

What can QR do now? Unfortunately nothing but to wait till the B787 gives them a definite date as to when they would start flying. Getting an A330 on a short notice is not possible at this stage AFAIK.

Exactly, that is not an immediate solution, actually the only solution is the one they are doing, cancel flights and try to accomodate the situation and pray for boeing to find a fast solution, and try to get planes from Airbus as fast as possible, if it´s possible to expedite the planes they have in order(i´m not sure about this).

This is going to be expensive for boeing, and I´m really waiting to see who´s the first Airline to explote against them, because this is another delay in the short life of the machine, Imagine that Qatar has 5 or 6 planes on ground but ANA has 17 machines AOG.

QR will have a blast with this planes as soon as the problem is solve because they are really planning a big expansion with them, and with the new NDIA, but it seem that both programs are keeping AAB awake during the night.

What will happen with the A350??? i´m sure we will enjoy hours of typing here....

Sorry if this is off topic but I am flying QR at the end of the month, does anyone know when the new Doha airport opens? If so is QR going to change all it's flights to the new airport at the same time? Thanks Steve

I have a booking in mid April, but it is not showing any changes of time or aircraft at this stage. Where did you get the source of this piece of information. I thought they were using a340's as a replacement for the 787 rather than cancel the DOH-LHR-DOH legs.

On some routes A320 are replacing the B787s (e.g. Zurich). Not great. I know of some pax who desert QR just for that fo their weekly commute.

I am booked on QR 076 LHR - DOH later this month. It was supposed to be on a 787 (which of course is the reason I made the booking on that particular flight), but the equipment is currently listed as 77W. It is a disappointment to miss the 787.

One has to ask, is Mr. AAB stirring the pot for higher compensation. QR had one revenue route on 787 before grounding. QR can claim their future expansion plan suffered. How can their existing network suffer?

That AAB has remained so unusually quiet suggests some serious placating is going on behind closed doors.

The Apr 16 leg to LHR has now been changed to the slightly later flight that leaves at 07:55, but the May 1 return from LHR has not been altered as yet. I think they are still selling seats on the 16:00, but only Business and full Y, but I expect to be transferred to the 15:05 flight if Boeing cannot get a quick fix out before then.
