Russian 747 operator Air Bridge Cargo (ABC) has applied with the DOT to greatly increase its operations to the United States.

The carrier which currently serves Chicago and Dallas seeks to add freighter service to Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

Carrier proposes to initially add Los Angeles in Miami service as soon as April.

This move is kinda interesting as ABC has been causing significant loses for Volga Dnepr which had recently announced the need for a major shakeup to reduce the red ink on ABC's schedule service flying. I guess growing US business is part of these changes:

Any reason why Volga Dnepr operate two separate cargo airlines?

If they are loosing so much money with ABC would integrating them maybe under single umbrella and better share resources and staff be more productive?

Also if scheduled service so loss making at ABC, why not look at ACMI or charter model for 747 fleet instead?

I'm guessing it has to do with Russian laws. ABC operate an all western fleet, while Volga-Dnepr operates the Russian types. I'm not an expert on this, but my guess would be that it might cost them more to operate both fleets under a single company. The western fleet (747s) are all registered outside of Russia due to high import costs in Russia that are in place to protect domestic aircraft production. Perhaps ABC is registered outside Russia as well, though I couldn't come up with any conclusive information on that.

You can't sustain an operation selling your services for free. They have been offering $0 freight ++ in recent times x/Asia to fill up their planes. Can't be sustainable.

Other carriers have been doing that as well, actually it usually is zero freight plus fuel and security surcharges. One can argue if that is still better than flying hot air on a return segment.

The best solution however is, to adapt schedules flexible to the market conditions,

BTW, I wish LCAG would have the same freedoms in Russia ABCenjoys in Germany and other EU countries.

Same for AFKLMP Cargo. They used to operate AMS-SVO-PVG and wanted to change that to AMS-SVO-ALA. The Russians said Njet and as a result the quite successful fullfreight services to SVO had to be terminated.
