US Airways Using UA Gates MCO

Hey a.netters, I had to make a few trips to MCO this week to pick up and drop off some friends...anyways, I noticed that US has been using UA's gates at MCO, particularly 35 and 36...I find this odd since all US flights usually leave from gates 50-59.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Gate ownership and operations have changed a lot over the years. I find it odd that 35 and 36 would be used. some of the gates in the 30s wing are GOAA gates, but I think 35 and 36 actually belong to United. That is a good question

US does the same thing at MSP. They usually RON a 320/321 on one of Delta's gate on C Concourse and it turns a first flight in the morning. I actually came in on a Delta MD88 some time last year into ORF and we parked at one of CO's gates. This was around midnight and i'm assuming all their gates on B were occupied by RONs.

UA recently changed their leased gates at MCO. UA now have 31, 40, 42-44, 46 & 47. CO (which at MCO still has a separate lease arrangement) have 33, 35, 41 & 48. So basically UA now has the entire 40s wing plus 3 gates on the 30's. Gates 36 and 39 (there is no jetway at 38) have been returned to the airport as common use gates.

US RON aircraft had used gate 41, which was a common use gate before the change. That aircraft now RON on 36 or 39.

Does this have something to do with US flying the 332 into MCO, potentially making an adjacent gate unusable due to the 332 wing span? This could create a scenario where US would have to look to UA to borrow gates.

The gate situation for US at MSP is a weird one. They're having to borrow what, 3-4 gates in the C concourse for RONs? I can imagine things get busy during the morning push where US has that sole gate counter to handle those multiple flights.

US has permanent gate counters at C9, C10, and C11 (as well as E2 and E4) plus a portable one on a wheels that is usually at E1 for the DCA flights but can quickly moved to other gates if needed. US' morning schedule at MSP is weird because at the flights are basically at the same time:

5:15 CLT
5:15 PHX (only on peak days)
6:00 DCA
6:45 PHL
7:00 CLT
7:15 PHX
NOTHING FOR 4 HOURS
10:55 DCA
11:10 PHL
11:25 PHX

US no longer flies the A332 into MCO. It was only for November-February. A332 operations resume at MCO in late March. When the A332 flies into MCO, they use gate 58. 57 is also widebody capable, but I don't know for both the A332 and 767, or just the 767.

Both 57 and 58 can take the A330. At least once in January there were 2 on the ground together with a sub from PHL. Gate 59 sits between 57 and 58 but does not have a jetway allowing additional room for WB.

Every wing of gates at MCO has at least 2 WB gates.

I can't see there being enough space at either airside 1 or 3 for a combined carrier.

Any chance B6 moves over to the 90's (where they would still have Customs) and AA/US can tie up at airside 1?

No real plans have been made for integrating AA and US. It will depend on the number of lease gates they will request.

Both AA and US lease 4 gates each. If the number of leased gates stay at 8 then either could accommodate the other at their current wing.....not taking RON aircraft into consideration. With the DL/NW merger, DL did not increase the number of gates. With the UA/CO merger, UA increased the total number of leased gates by 3.

Both AA and US have open check-in counter space next to their current space. ... so that should not be an issue.

My thinking is that AA would move to Airside 3 with US for 2 reasons. First.... the new AA will be the 2nd largest carrier at MCO (after WN). The US wing has their old Club space a available to create a AA/Oneworld Lounge. Oneworld is the only alliance without a lounge at MCO. Plus that airside has the most open gates for RON aircraft. Second...B6 is the fastest growing carrier at MCO. B6 would have room to grow without having to relocate.

I guess that's where I see the issue being. DL has all the extra gate and ramp space that airside 4 offers at night, whereas airside 3 is always full at night already (except for NK) and doesn't really offer anything in the way of ramp parking. No doubt a combined carrier will "rightsize" the operation and there will more than likely be a loss of flights.

Everything else you mentioned certainly makes sense, and I'm sure B6 would like the extra space available to them.

Yes, we had 3 762's from JFK and 2 763's from DFW in the past month.

Over the summer AA was regularly scheduling a 763 from MIA. They can even park 772s at their end gates as they have done in the past with diversions.
