So, it was reported in March last year, that Iran Air were to acquire some EX QF 747-300's
(http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/5423982/)

However, an interesting article in the newspaper today about how "AMERICAN investigators foiled a sophisticated plot to funnel three jumbo jets originally owned by Qantas to Iran, in defiance of strict trade sanctions."

You can read the whole article here:
http://www.theage.com.au/national/qa...-20130308-2frsa.html#ixzz2N0AiBZpx

And, the response from Qantas here:

One thing that got me thinking, are QF really responsible who gets the sold aircraft once they write them off their books?

I wouldn't think so, any more than you would not be responsible if you sold me a car and I sold it on to someone who used it in a crime or some such.

As long as QF had no knowledge or any reason to suspect that trade embargoes were going to be breached, then I can't see how they can be held responsible in anyway.

That's not true. If you sold the car to someone knowing they were going to provide it to criminals to commit a crime, you are part of the crime. It's conspiracy.

The only connection to Qantas is that it used to own the aircraft but sold them - legally - to someone else.

I think the headline in The Age is shoddy journalism. How is Qantas "caught in the plot"?

If you read the article it would almost appear that the California Leasing company was bitter at Qantas for not selling them the 747s and when QF sold them to the Middle East country , then Californian leasing company "told on them" to the US State Department.

I see ZERO liability on QF here.

Didn't LH sell some A300s to a Middle Eastern based company(same company?) that then funneled them to Iran?

Well, yes, but as long as QF didn't know what would happen to these planes, I should imagine they are in the clear.

This California company is well known in the aviation industry circles for their aggressive and questionable practices..in fact a lot of companies don't deal with them at all. They have ruined a few transactions...Its very bold of a broker to complain about one of the world's largest and reputable airlines.

They are not a leasing company, they are a broker acting as a leasing company. This so called leasing company was involved in the sale of a problematic DC-10 to Ghana Airways. There was a posting on these forums about that.

It seems Qantas sold to a credible group with real money..instead of some broker out of California. Not sure how Qantas is responsible at all.

HMMMMM...aircraft brokers?!%&$*...everyone has their price. Given the enormous pile of paperwork involved in the transactions of aircraft sales especially where international customers are involved opens up a cauldron of grey areas that those in the know, can navigate through. Qantas has much to lose and not much to gain from a deal like this. A broker on the other hand works off of percentages and three 747-3's can bring in much gelt. While the deal may appear fictitious, the money in the bank sure isn't.

This is total BS - a good example of why I don't read the paper - in the world of print journalism, Aussie papers are among the very worst.

These planes left Qantas and the Australian registry years ago. I remember seeing them without titles or 'roo in Jeddah at least two years ago. They were tired old Hajj hacks when Iran Air got their hands on them. What has happened to them since I do not know, not a lot, they certainly aren't in service and are another example of Iran's hopelessly dysfunctional aviation policy, like Iran Air's A320s - hundreds of construction numbers apart, as little commonality as half a dozen A320s could have, bought by people who don't know the first thing about what they're doing. Rolls-powered 747-300s are laughably unsuited to Iran's P&W-centric world of Jurassic -200s and SPs. In fact as far as I'm aware, a Rolls Royce-powered aircraft has never operated inside Iran, ever. God knows what the boys in the engine shops at Mehrabad are supposed to do with these machines. I guess it's one reason why they haven't entered service.

The scandal is how badly sanctions are effecting Iran, how they empower a dreadful government, how they harm civilians. But that isn't the narrative in a US / Likudnik colony like Australia, so the story is instead a strung-together bunch of misleading nonsense to distract rubes from what really goes on the world.

fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz
