To many, cargo is boring, but I encourage anyone with even a passing interest to read this article on Centurion Air Cargo from today's Miami Herald. It's a fascinating look at the history of a cargo airline.

About half of Centurion’s cargo is perishable: Besides fish from Chile, it carries fresh flowers from Colombia and Ecuador, and asparagus from Peru. Southbound, the fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighters carries a lot of electronics and telecom equipment, car parts and other manufactured goods. The carrier has carved out a niche in transporting horses, including Argentinian caballos criollos, the beloved steeds of the gauchos, which are popular, among other things, in polo.

He hopes to hit $1 billion in 2014 and double that by 2016, growing the fleet from the current 11 MD-11Fs and two Boeing 747Fs to 18 MD-11Fs and 10 additional 747-400Fs.

Apparently they intend to stick to the MD-11 for a while. Who's providing the 747 capacity ?

Most recently it's Cargolux, but they've used Southern Air in the past as well.

There is also the issue if N988AR, and if it is to be fixed.

AFAIK, there has been no decision on that that yet.

Intersting, afaik they have 10 MD-11Fs (6 with SkyLease Cargo and 4with Centurion Air Cargo). The elevent MD-11Fs (N988AR of Centurion Air Cargo) was damaged in VCP (2012-10-13).

Never heard that they have Boeing 747s.

From what I have read on md-eleven.net, it's going to be scrapped. In the meantime Centurion has added N987AR 48427/471, it was a former Cargoitalia. Also, on the side of airlines retiring MD-11s, we may take in consideration EVA Air Cargo, which was the source for Nordic Global Cargo four MD-11Fs and Lufthansa Cargo which will probably replaced the four second hand aircraft they have with the B777-F30s that are due to be delivered from later this year.

N988AR was written off in the landing accident, caused, btw, when the FO chopped the power high in the flare, resulting in a high sinkrate that could not be arrested despite the actions of the captain, who was also a trainer. The main gear on whichever side it was failed about halfway through the roll, not on touchdown (which probably saved them from flipping over), at about 80 knots.

Any information about the two Boeing 747s they use?

Apparently they use Cargolux aircraft now, and before Southern Air provided the capacity. Probably no specific aircraft is allocated to them.
