In addition to rapid growth in its passenger flying, CEO Al Baker at IATA World Cargo Symposium says they envisage Qatar Airways Cargo becoming one of the top-5 cargo airlines in the next 5-years.
QR already has 11 freighters in service, with 6 more A330F and single 777F arriving in 2013, supplementing the belly capacity of 121 aircraft. Carrier is set to have a fleet of 170 by 2015, with total orders planned for 250.
Additionally the soon to open Hamad International Airport will have a dedicated $1bil in a cargo complex for the airlines use.
Cargo revenue account for 28% of QR revenues today compared to industry average of 12.

QR has 9 F aircraft today; 3 A300, 2 A330, 4 77F. It will recieve 1 more A330 (and retire the A300), and 3 more 77F by the end of this year.

I think you can exclude the integrators as Al Baker does so also.
So the top-5 cargo in 2011 airlines were then:
1. Cathay
2. Korean
3. Emirates
4. Lufthansa
5. Singapore

Hmm. Linked Bloomberg article says
"Two more A330s will be delivered in the coming weeks and three additional by the end of the year. The company will also receive a Boeing 777 freighter by the middle of the year"

QR has a long way to go before it breaks into the top 5, it has stressed a desire to convert its A330 fleet into freighters. However, this will only happen when the A350s start rolling in 2015. As of right now there is no way QR have any pax aircraft to spare for cargo conversion.
BTW, almost forgot about the 380. We will probably see it fly in sometime next year when the move to the new airport is finally made.

It was recently reported that they will order 3 more A330F aircraft.

This sounds like an April Fool's joke; like QR wants to be one of the top 5 carriers to TPA. I haven't read any good news about the cargo industry in years.

Aren't most/all of these trying to reduce their exposure to cargo?

QR Cargo is negotiating with the Netherlands Government for more cargo traffic rights through AMS to permit the airline to replace the LUX stopover with AMS on its 2x/weekly DOH-LUX-ATL B777F flights.
This would create DOH-AMS-ATL similar to the existing 2x/weekly DOH-AMS-ORD B777F routing, resulting in more efficient use of B777F crews.

They dont need that many freighter aircraft. Bulk of cargo goes in the belly of passenger aircraft. Look at EK.
If they are talking about 250 plane fleet, with bulk being widebody, that indeed is very much potential tonnage capacity.

Sure some of carriers are having their own issues like LH and the FRA night ban, or internal financial pressures as global economies weigh.
But I don't think anyone doubts the long term prospects of logistics. Seems QR being in a fortunate locale could indeed become a big player.

I am worried about their expansion, along with EK, Etihad, etc. The middle east seems to be in somewhat of a bubble when it comes to airlines and air travel service. I'm beginning to assume the bubble isn't popping because of oil money, but I'm not 100% sure.
If QR wants to be a top-5 airline, they'll have to expand their fleet considerably, and get the coveted contracts to distribute in the USA, PRC, and other G-8 nations, where most cargo is shipped from/to. If they want to expand in the USA, I bid them good luck, because 5X and FX have a firm grip on the cargo market here, along with DHL out of CVG. I've seen KZ try to enter into the US market and they've been relegated to the larger cities because of contracts.

Emirates is already #3 spot and they don't have much freight to the US due ULH nature of flights.
Sitting in the middle of historic silk road and within hours of Asia, Europe, Africa and Middle East is plenty it seems. There is a lot this world that does not involve the US.

Actually they are pretty serious about this, not long ago they were trying to take control of cargolux, I remember that I read that AAB left the meeting very angry because he couldn´t get what he wanted...
Obviously the bulk of the planes is a huge capacity uplift for QR and with the orders in place for pax and cargo planes plus the existing fleet i´m sure they will be very close to that top 5.
I would also know where is Turkish Cargo in the list, because they are expanding a lot and getting cargo planes as well, the other day i saw a TK A330F in NBO.

Until they get many many dozen more widebodies a la QR, a few dedicated freighters are not going to make a dent in TK (or for that matter QR) displacing eg CI from the top 10 when they got 20 744Fs (ok so 3 are stored right now) and most of them are plying the pacific! At least not any time soon.
