The recent huge orders from Lufthansa Group, Turkish Airlines, Lion Air, Ryanair... to respectively Airbus and Boeing remind me of the trend of orders placed in the late 80s and early 90s by mainly U.S. carriers for the nacquisition of 73s and 75s mainly. At that time the aviation industry was forecasting good future and airlines were optimistic as well as travellers.
Is the industry recovering well again to give hope for good use of such a big number of new aircrafts ?

Quoting TS-IOR (Thread starter): remind me of the trend of orders placed in the late 80s and early 90s
All those planes built in 88-93 are reaching birthdays 20-25. While many of them still have a bit of useful life left in them, a lot of them need replacing in the next 5 years.
These recent orders are both larger and more numerous than those of the 80/90s.
They are made due to the growth of local markets rather than by need of renewal.
Here is a summary of the 10 largest orders, the latest (by Ryanair, at today's date) ranks 11th.
Prices shown are list prices :
1. Airbus: March 18, 2013 - the largest order in the history of civil aviation with a contract worth more than $ 24 billion (€ 18.4 billion) signed by Lion Air . The order is for 234 Airbus A320, 109 A320 Neo, 65 A321 and 60 A321 Neo.

Ok, granted the Chinese air travel market is booming. But:

It is well known that FR recycles their fleet rather quickly to keep their maintenance costs to a minimum, discussed in this thread: Ryanair Set To Order 200 Boeing 737s (by captainmeeerkat Mar 11 2013 in Civil Aviation)
Quoting Azure (Reply 2): 6. Boeing: December 13, 2011 - Southwest Airlines orders 208 737 MAX, for $ 19 billion.
With Southwest dumping the 717 and keeping the 733 a bit longer than planned to backfill the 717 flying, existing 73Gs will eventually replace the 733s as the 738/Max come online to take over the current 73G routes, increasing capacity while keeping frequency constant. Remember, they're getting rid of 88 717s and not all of it is just dismantling AirTran's network. They need to replace both the 717 and 733 fleets.
These huge orders are for both expansion (Asia) and fleet renewal (US/EU).

I doubt how many aircafts will actually be delivered to them.
Lion Air, an airline ordered 464 planes while they only have 96 now.
IndiGo, 180 on order while they have 63 now, but consider how many airline from India have failed in the past few years.

We can add LH's 108 frame order, can't remember the break up right now and also TK's 117 frame A321s and A321NEOs. These are also recent chunky orders.
