Dear friends,

How many 747s did Eastern use and in wich routes? I know they ordered 100s but cancelled, leased some 100 from Pan Am and later leased some 200s too.

Thanks, Leonardo

No. One ex QF aircraft was indeed painted but the deal fell through.

History of that aircraft. It was in Eastern livery for about 6 weeks. (Reference to Eastern should read Air Lines, not Airlines).

Thanks for sharing that very nice picture of something that was and might have been -- that highly-polished bare lower fuselage is beautiful.

Also noticeable is the cheatline curving down at the nose. In the early Seventies, IIRC, EAL's cheatlines were straight, as can be seen on all of the other EA 747 pics you included. Example, this 727-225 at CMH in April 1972, a "Whisperjet" in white paint:

Around 1980, Eastern's noses started looking like the below pic, with the curve (also by then, they'd moved to full-fuselage polished Al).

So, I'm curious, when was that gorgeous photo of the 747-238 taken? Circa 1980? Eastern must have had plans for it -- does anyone know why they got cold feet?

It's a very nice-looking livery, too bad she didn't fly that way very long.

Sorry I didn't read your link earlier! It states,

- Intended sale to Eastern Airlines did not eventuate - April 1, 1980
- Repainted into full Qantas livery and rolled out - April 28, 1980
- Returned to service Sydney - Nadi as QF93 - May 14, 1980
- Operated final revenue service Brisbane - Christchurch - Sydney as QF55/46 (Captain R. Probert) - March 18, 1985

Why did sale "not eventuate"? Does anyone know?

Cheers

Eastern bought those 747-200 as it intended to fly them on the MIA-LHR route after the PA-NA merger..National Airlines was the only carrier aside from PA and TW to use LHR back then. But the route instead reverted back to LGW and Eastern decided to pull back from the deal and didnt fly the route until much later on, still to Gatwick.

The CAB had a route case to determine whether Pan Am would be allowed to keep the MIA-LHR route after their merger with National. Eastern, Air Florida, and several other airlines also applied for the route.

Pan Am was allowed to keep the route, in part because as National's corporate successor, they would be the only airline allowed to use LHR under the Bermuda II agreement.

Around the same time, the British and US governments agreed to let a second airline from each country fly between Miami and London, using LGW. Laker Airways was the British carrier selected for MIA-LGW, and Air Florida was the US carrier.

Eastern was awarded MIA-LGW in 1984, after Air Florida shut down. Eastern's authority was transferred to Continental after EA was taken over by Texas Air.

Eastern had several variations on the hockey stick, these are the 6 main ones:

Whisperliner:

1966 - description: White overall, thin metal band on extreme lower fuselage, Dark blue straight at nose.
Earliest variation had Eastern titles behind stripes on tail. 2nd early version had Eastern "Blue meatball" logo on tail and stripes straight off aft fuselage. Whisperjet/Whisperliner titles appear on 727, DC9, L1011

Modified Whisperliner:

1975 - description: Similar overall to modified Whisperliner, but metal extends higher on lower fuselage and white curves down at nose. Some 727-200s had Blue curving down similar to metal colors as well. Whisperjet/Whisperliner titles appear on SOME 727, DC9, L1011, but was no longer on all.

1981 - description: Metal overall still, fuselage stripes thin and all undr window line. Created as direct result of IAM cost cutting measures, reduced manhours to mask 727-200 for painting by 65% (due to not needing to mask each window individually).
757s all delivered in this scheme with 757 titles on tail.

1988 - description: final paintscheme variation. Dispensed with black nosecones and glareshields. Painted fleet number aft of blue area of nose. Appeared on both thin and full stripe versions, in many cases as an obivous patchup following maintenance.

I've never seen these variations. Are there photos somewhere?

The first variation was the one with the logo on the tail which first appeared on a DC8-50 in April 1964.This aicraft had the bottom stripe curve under the nose.Next had logo on the tail and these stripes going around the nose like the scheme that would be adopted.at least one aircraft of each type operated at the time was painted like this except for the then new 727.I have seen photos of each type painted like this except for a DC-7B,which i have been told did exist. We only got Electras here in HSV at the time and N5524 wore this scheme. There is a photo of a L1049G at www.zoggavia.com in this scheme. The Hockey Stick scheme first appeared in late summer 1964.Some had Eastern on the tail behind the stripe. Most employees liked the second variation with the logo on the tail the best, but I heard that Floyd Hall didnt want any variation of the falcon on the tail.
