LH's Last Seasonal A380 Flight To MIA (3/30/13)

Lufthansa will be pulling out the Airbus A380 out of MIA and replacing it with the "Queen of the Skies" 747-400

The A380 will return to SFO starting tomorrow (3/31/13)

The A380 is set to return to MIA in October for the winter season.

So how is LH deploying its A380s for the summer timetable? And how many are there in the fleet at the moment?

As far as I know the cities to be served by LH A380 in the summer are:
- New York (JFK) ... daily
- San Francisco... daily
- Houston (???) ... daily (???)
- Johannesburg ... daily
- Beijing... daily
- Tokyo... daily
- Singapore... daily

Am I forgetting any?... Are they all served daily?... And how many frames are required for these services?

Yea not really news here. A normal seasonal schedule change. When is MIA getting the 748? That will be good to see. I thought the announced something about the 748.

I don't remember who said it, I think I saw it on Anet. And May, sounds good. Looking forward to see the pax 748 here.

No JFK this summer, double daily will be operated by B744!

Which means SFO has been swapped for MIA. That's also what they did last year, right?

I would imagine they'll switch it back again for this year's winter schedule.

Indeed its been like that for the last few years now. Would be good to see it year round. Had the pleasure of flying the route Winter before last.

That's really not many destinations considering they have ten planes. Here's the times these planes will be away from home:

IAH 10:05-09:00+1 (22:55)
JNB 22:05-05:45+2 (31:40)
NRT 13:50-14:30+1 (24:40)
PEK 17:15-14:45+1 (21:30)
SFO 09:40-10:45+1 (25:05)
SIN 21:35-05:40+2 (32:05)

Of the 240 plane-hours they have every day, the planes will be gone for 158. I suppose the rest of the time will be spent doing maintenance and wing fixes?

The PEK rotation could work with only one plane. SFO, NRT, SIN could be done with four planes and IAH, JNB with three with time to spare. That leaves two planes.

I don't remember how utilisation is calculated, but those 15.8 hours are time spent away from base, not time spent in the air. The JNB and SIN routes both have a lot of downtime at the other end, the other routes are normal turnarounds. Across the fleet, it probably adds up to 12-13 flight hours per aircraft, per day, on average.

Compared to the 747-8i utilization up until March (four daily destinations, DEL, BLR, IAD, LAX, with four planes) I find this number low. That number was above 20 hours away from home on average.

I'm not really sure what they mean either. I was just under the impression that LH are not utilizing the fleet as much as they could in order to leave room for extended maintenance. D-AIMB has been in maintenance for quite some time now getting the final wing crack fixes. I believe the other A380s will probably follow.
