Not for SAA. They have had "fleet replacements" and "fleet modernisations" several times. Swinging wildly from A320 to B738 and back to A320. I am sick to death of my tax money going down the drain. Some idiot decides on a whim that Airbus is out and Boeing is in. And then rinse and repeat. How many BILLIONS of ZAR have they burnt through?
They have zero clue how to run an effective and efficient airline. There is no long term growth plan. Look at Heathrow route, once a 3 daily 744 pared down to what, an A332 now?
As you should be. But I fail to see how handicapping them by making them use a generation older equipment than the competition will improve this situation.

Isn't equipment part of such a plan? I have no doubt there is plenty that isn't done right but I fail to see how complaining about them wanting to make a generation upgrade of long haul equipment is an example of them not planning forward.

I have not kept track of their London schedule in many years but I just looked and there are currently two daily London flights, one A332 and one A346. Fail to see how this data alone demonstrate they have no clue, e.g. what would happen if they had better equipment?
Because they have PROVEN they are unable to make money. They have PROVEN that after R20 BILLION or so of government bailouts, that they still CANNOT be competitive. Like USA legacies deep in the red, is this considered a success storey?
The A340 is far from the most efficient airliner out there - just ask LH who operate nearly every currently availabe 4-holer (and the A330), they're not exactly money burners, now are they?
Hint: The aircraft are not the (sole) problem at SAA. There are other airlines in South Africa making money just fine with much older fleets. So this constant bitching by SAA needing latest generation aircraft doesn't hold any water. Just dig a little into the history of SAA. Like CEO's that insist on being flown by helicopter to meetings because cars don't cut it for him. Stuff like that when an airline is failing are simply not acceptable. Do you even know what has been going on inside SAA?
