Hey All,

I was driving near YYZ when I noticed two EK A380's parked at YYZ at around 3pm. One near where it usually parks at T1 and the other on the apron near 24R/24L.

I know that they are scheduled to fly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so I wasn't expecting to see them at all and saw the EY 77W land while killing time at Wendy's/Country Style so I don't think it's a schedule change.

Anyone one know why they were there?? My guess is a big delay or a diversion from/to IAH as that is the only flight path that would go near YYZ I think.

Apparently A6-EDY operated EK241 Dubai but it was unable to operate the return EK242 due to a technical issue.

Subsequently A6-EDO positioned New York JFK – Toronto as EK7204 after operating EK203 Dubai – New York JFK. The aircraft then operated the delayed EK242 Toronto – Dubai. EK204 New York JFK – Dubai was therefore cancelled.

EDY's nose gear was damaged while being pushed back as EK242. Tug driver jacknifed the towbar subsequently turning the nose wheele beyond its safe angle limits damaging the steering actuators. EDY is still parked on stand H11 being repaired or possibly awaiting parts. It took ground crews over one hour to carefully tow it off the gate around 1am in the morning after a complete off-loading of EK242 was done.

Who handles the ramp for EK at YYZ?

You know the gear is up and locked when it takes full throttle to taxi to the terminal.

EK hasnt had a lot of luck on the ramp at YYZ. There was the collision not so long ago with one of the service trucks, and now this.

EK204 New York JFK %u2013 Dubai was therefore cancelled.

Sucks a bit for those passengers but at least there's a second frequency for JFK. Would they have been allowed to operate YYZ-JFK-DXB if the loads were light enough?

Today's EK241 is inbound for 1615 and there are no signs the sick 380 is going anywhere soon, so two 380s on the ground at YYZ again.

I would suspect today's 241 may be bringing in parts and EK maintenance people to fix the nose structure and sign off the C of A. Possible ferry out or reposition to JFK? Interesting that they cancelled Tuesday's EK204. Load must have been light enough to rebook pax on their other flight or interline to other carriers?

Most non-Canadian passengers would need a U.S. transit visa if the flight stopped in the U.S. which they obviously wouldn't have.

Why would passengers need a transit visa? The passengers would not deplane and if they did they would go into an isolated area where they cannot mix with arriving or departing passengers. Technically the passengers should never "enter" the US if the flight was routed YYZ-JFK-DXB.

I thought all passengers on flights landing in the U.S. and continuing beyond (even on the same flight) required a U.S. transit visa unless they have a passport from a Visa Waiver country or Canada or Mexico? Am I wrong?

I think the cancelled flight out of JFK was ferried empty to YYZ and was used to fly the EK242 which left mid-afternoon on Tuesday or even that night. If it had any passengers they flew to YYZ first and then on to DXB where transiting means a "Customs B" check and back in to the terminal.

Evidently they had to charter an Atlas B744 (landed on May 3rd about 1500LT) to bring in a bunch of Airbus parts and a jacking system to raise up the nose wheel to do a replacement or repair.

EDY has relocated from the East Hold parking to be in front of the AC 747 hangar south side.

Is AC actually going to help them out?

EK uses AC's T1 at YYZ as does EY. If not mistaken EK and EY (and 9W which AC codeshares with) are the only non-Star Alliance carriers at T1.

Meant to say was AC going to allow use of their hangar. In the past they have not given EK use of their facilities for repair. Sunwing is the only other non-Star at T1. And its the other way around, its the GTAA's T1 that AC uses as a high paying tenant, not owner. Star members have linked themselves at T1 to maintain the ease of pax transfer with code share, similar to oneWorld and Skyteam members joining forces with their partners at T3. The one-offs such as EL AL or PIA have maintained their presence at which ever Terminal can accommodate them based on gate availability. You may recall both EL AL and PIA were at T2 back in the 80s and 90s but relocated to 3 when the re-construction began.

It's common for carriers to help other carriers. Lets not forget QF leased an A380 capable hangar from SQ to repair VH-OQA 'Nancy Bird'.

Wow pretty amazing to see a 560t aircraft resting on jacks.

I take it the aircraft has returned to home base?
