Just hearing initial reports of a shootout just outside of the Security Checkpoint at Terminal B at IAH.. Nothing being reported on the news yet. But this is coming from crewmembers at the Terminal now.

EDIT: Also possible multiple fatalities

ExpressJet will be having the FAA ATCSCC issue a company groundstop momentarily. Unsure if UA will follow.

Reports I'm seeing on twitter that it was a single self inflicted gun shot wound while in line at security, not good. But one does have to wonder what the person was doing with a gun at security...

From KHOU-TV:

Quote:
Updated today at 2:05 PM (CDT)
HOUSTON –- A man shot himself at Bush Intercontinental Airport in north Houston early Thursday afternoon, the Houston Police Department confirmed with KHOU 11 News.

The suspect walked into the security checkpoint area inside Terminal B and fired at least two shots into the air, according to an HPD.

The captain said an air marshal fired at the suspect, but missed. The man then pulled out a pistol and shot himself, according to an HPD captain.
He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Since a good number of flights into Mexico depart Terminal B using E145 equipment, I'm guessing there's more to the story than simple frustration with the TSA folks.

I'm surprised this didn't happened sooner. What's next? Prescreening before you actually get into the TSA lines?

I guess that FAM was in the right spot at the right time. Even though he missed. It made the guy end it himself. Considering I'm seeing he had an AR-15 and a Pistol. Obviously if that FAM hadn't been there to draw on him, he was going to do harm to others.... Kind of like what happened around January in Oregon. A guy pulled out a gun just as he was about to head into a mall and another man with a concealed carry pulled on him and the potential offender ended it himself outside the mall right then and there.

CNN is now reporting that injuries were life threatening but does not say anything about a death. Shot 2 bullets and in the air, before shooting himself.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and later died. Interesting that this happened with a big gun convention taking place in Houston this week.

You haven't driven down I-45 near IAH lately have you?

There is a big billboard when you are headed southbound - advertising "Big Gun Show" - and there is one at some location in the Houston area every weekend.

After the fifteen years I spent as an urban high school teacher,
I pretty much stereotype anything I feel like stereotyping.

Otherwise, I read the El Paso Times on-line every morning.

No. It was back in December. He went into the mall and killed two people before himself, not outside.

This is probably one of the best posts on the site in a long while. If only the new terminal was fully opened.

He left behind a suicide note that said he had a "monster within" and wanted the cops to take care of it. The note said Moore had a bigger plan, but decided to show mercy on others.

Moore posted two cryptic messages on his Facebook wall Wednesday: "This Life Will Crash Tomorrow!" and "I recently had the chance of staring death in the face, and she was beautiful."

So, this was a premeditated but failed 'suicide by cop' scenario...

Hopefully this spurs some additional thinking and discussion when it comes to airport security measures.

I've always been leery of long security lines being vulnerable. Any time you have a large concentration of people in a small area, it can be problematic. All the more reason to go for the shorter line at security, and measures to speed up, spread out security screening efforts.

I need to amend my post.

Yes there is a 'big gun show' somewhere in the Houston area every weekend.

However, this weekend May 3 - 5 is the National Rifle Association Annual Meeting at the George R Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston.

Unfortunately, it will probably spur knee-jerk reactions.

But really, there is no getting around the fact that democracy/liberty and security are not fully compatible, which would you choose? That combined with the fact that there is always a bigger fool/mentally deranged/criminally inclined person that will go beyond the scope of anything less than an infinitely costly/complex/time-consuming/invasive security system means such risks can NEVER be totally avoided.
