Not sure what happened to the thread from earlier, but it seemed interesting.

Any thoughts on potential future destinations from SJC?

I can't imagine VX would face a whole lot of competition on SJC-IAD/FLL/MIA/PVR, and I surely would love to see UA's reaction to SJC-EWR (if VX somehow acquired slots).

I was on the first SJC-LAX flight yesterday afternoon and back to SJC, loads were pretty light, but it was only the first day and was mid-week. They would be a great addition to JFK/BOS/IAD.

I don't think UA would do anything really if they started EWR. CO flew it until the late 2000's (don't remember the year it stopped). I'd see UA bringing ORD back (which is doubtful anyway) before EWR.

I was EXTREMELY impressed with the service, I think once service catches on, they will do very well here!

JFK? If they got a slot for JFK they would probably use it to SFO, LAX or start SAN-JFK before SJC, unless they landed some lucrative tech contracts that want SJCJFK.

AUS? Maybe. SJCAUS is the original nerd bird.

BOS? Maybe. There is tech traffic and good yields between the Bay Area and Boston.

With that said, I wouldn't get too excited about a San Jose build up. VX doesn't have much of appetite, it would seem, to expand beyond LAX and SFO (JFKLAS being the only exception).

I'll get a lot of flak for this one i'm sure...but I could see SJC-RDU in the works. With UA's RDU-SFO remaining consistently full and profitable it may be worth a shot. SJC is closer and more convenient to Silicon Valley which is where most of the traffic is going.

You may very well see it but VX nor any other airline does. That's because during 3Q12 (that's last year's peak summer season) a whopping 57 PDEW (O&D) traveled in the SJC-RDU market. For the 4th quarter of 2012, the PDEW was 44.
Exactly how many nonstops each day do you envision Virgin flying on that route which, btw, would be the second route the airline would fly that serves neither LA nor SF. (LAS-JFK, as already pointed out be BigGSFO, is the only existing one.)

There's so much more that could be said but none of it is really necessary.

Yeah, but remember that probably some RDU traffic goes to SFO instead. SJC-RDU would probably pull some of that SFO traffic from people who have to get up to SFO due to lack of SJC service (I'll bet this is true in a lot of potential SJC markets).

AA once announced SJC-RDU but then never started it. I think Midway did it for a short time. I could see AS doing SEA-RDU and SJC-RDU maybe.

You have to look at the entire bay area market to get an accurate number. Lots of people who live in OAK, SFO, and SJC fly to SFO just because its a nonstop...Theres more of a market then a lot of people on these forums will admit and the business is only growing more by the day...

That could be interesting...If DL and AS weren't in the middle of little spat maybe...SEA-RDU is being very aggressively pursued by RDU with DL.

It is often the case that when a non-stop route starts, pdew goes up, sometimes quite dramatically. For example, when Frontier started DEN-PHF someone posted that there were 16 pdew - and that route has done better than okay.

6 New Flight From DEN From Frontier? (by PI731 Feb 4 2010 in Civil Aviation)

GRR-DEN: 59 PDEW, $224.94 average fare
GRB-DEN: 30 PDEW, $169.81 average fare
LGB-DEN: 13 PDEW, $133.56 average fare
MSN-DEN: 34 PDEW, $247.17 average fare
PHF-DEN: 16 PDEW, $208.78 average fare
SBA-DEN: 35 PDEW, $240.13 average fare

Most of them have done well, except LGB and GRB (and Southwest has jumped on GGR-DEN), so I don't think pdew is necessarily a helpful metric if there is no non-stop on the route.

I have no idea if SJC-RDU would work, but it might be an interesting discussion.

This is rumored and speculated, but I've not seen any clear evidence that AS and DL are in a spat. Last time I looked, they had a very strong partnership.
