What's The Deal With Gate 132 At LAX - Tbit West?

Hi all,

Long, long time lurker here -- finally made the splurge, so please be kind to the newbie.

Since it's my hometown airport, I have a massive interest in and have been following religiously the TBIT-West renovation project for the past few years.

I know regulars on here from the area can probably comment so I'm reaching out in the hopes that you can solve this mystery.

I'm most interested in why, since the west-side gates of the north wing of TBIT West have been turned over to LAWA -- including the full use of Gates 130, 132 and 134--months ago, that I've never seen a single aircraft utilize Gate 132 since that handoff months ago (other than for initial gate testing purposes.)

For those that aren't already aware of it, there's a great webcam that's capturing the progress of the build out here:
http://www.earthcam.com/clients/lax/?cam=pano1

In viewing that webcam on an almost daily basis, I've not once seen an aircraft dock at 132. 130 and 134 are in use constantly. Both those gates are ADG VI (e.g. A380, 747-8) gates while 132 is only ADG III. Does that have something to do with it?

Would seem that TBIT is in desperate needs of gates and I would assume they'd use every open one. So what gives with 132?

132 has been used.

I have photos of Korean 77W there along with LAN 767 on 132.

They started to use 132 on regular basis on April 2nd, but there have been test flights utilizing the gate since as early as February by Cathay and El Al 777's.

I was hoping you'd respond.

Well I guess you've been watching more closely than I. I did see KE there during gate tests and in prep for handoff to LAWA, but nothing since.

On a somewhat related note, I find it interesting that LAWA is still sticking to their guns about the Central Core being ready by end of May.

Judging by where they're at now (the site isn't even completed, nonetheless any tenants having even begun any shred of build out) I can't imagine they'd have that ready anytime before August, but maybe they've got some magic up their sleeve?

I left LAX for SYD on the 24th of Jan and it was being used then as well. This was very late in the evening, maybe 9:30-10:00pm when I walked thru there. There was a QF A380 pulling out of the gate and about 20 minutes later a CX 77W was towed in for a flight to HKG.

Very impressive facility, can't wait to see the final finished product.

You must have your gates confused.

132 is not capable of parking the A380 and is a maximum category ADG V (eg 744) gate.

Small correction. 132 can be used up to ADG V if adjacent 130 and 134 are ADG V as well. If 130 or 134 are occupied by ADG VI's then 132 is merely a ADG III gate.

My apologies, didn't get the gate number as I took a quick thru. The gate I was referring to was just inside the temporary connector from the old side of TBIT. My guess is 132 would be the one to the far left which was roped off at the time, but looked like it was ready to go?

Are all the gates A380 able, whatever that means but I have seen that used on these forums before and really don't understand what is being talked about.

No not all TBIT West gates will be A380 compatible.

The terminal has a mix of ADG III through ADG VI gates.

Do you know when is the opening date of the new central terminal and what about the new FIS area? Also I passed by last week and the upper level of the check in area where the food court and didn't see any construction of the new security area.

The new central core great hall along with the dual level FIS is nearly complete.

Opening events are tentatively being planned around the third or fourth week of June.

Just curious what source you use for that type of information?

When you said dual level FIS, can you expand on that a little? Also, the current FIS was remodeled within the last few years. What will happen to it? It looks pretty new when I passed through it recently.

The new FIS will be spread across 2 levels.

Arriving passengers (from level-5) will access new CBP primary screening on level-3 via new sterile corridors and escalators. Once done with the passport booths, then passengers will take another set of escaltors down to baggage claim located on level-1 where there will be an initial 6 baggage claim devices.

The current FIS area (also on level-1) will see the removal of all existing CBP primary booths, reconfiguration of the 6 existing baggage claim devices into 4 larger ones and an expansion of CBP secondary queue, inspections and agriculture areas.

Once all complete with the phased renovations, the FIS area will feature a total of 10 mega baggage claim devices, and 80 arriving passenger processing booths. (the big unknown remains, will CBP be able to staff this). On paper its more than a doubling in hourly processing capacity.
