Was on HF 8918. Declared mayday with a great sense of urgency in his voice. Immediate descent from FL350 to FL200 and a phone patch with New York ATC which I couldn't hear due to terrible HF conditions. Is being handed off to VHF 126.02 in a few mins, don't know which centre that is. Aircraft is B752 N200UU.

edit: typo

FL200 140 degree radial, 265 miles from Wilmington, alternate Charlotte. We are now going to go direct to Charlotte. Change now to centre on 126.02.

If they chose CLT it must be something manageable. ILM is right on the coast and a half hour or more closer.

It's tracking now it's back under radar coverage. Was in the WATRS area before where there's no radar coverage and flightaware just fills in the blanks with estimated positions which are rarely correct in my experience. You should see it pop up on the tracking sites now.

Flightaware estimates position based on planned route of flight in transoceanic sectors. It isn't using radar data therefore is not a reliable source until its back inside an enroute centers control.

For this purpose flightradar24 is better, getting live radar info, and over the atlantic from FAA

FWIW flightview.com says the plane was flying from PHL to AUA, and diverted to CLT and is 19 minutes out of CLT as of this writing.

Do you think this flight chose CLT because of AWE operations there? Or some other basis for choice? Seems to me, from where they turned right, they would have had a large number of choices, several closer than CLT...

Are you home or maybe on a shared network ? Do you have a static IP ?

Same happened to me, but I'm on a flight right now. Just go through the main liveatc.net page, type in 8918 in the full site search, and find the appropriate link (towards the bottom), and navigate to the archive from there.

Cheers,

What radar? Wasn't it outside any radar coverage area?

Correct. As far as I know both sites receive the exact same data from the FAA ASDI feed so neither site will be better than the other.

Or... more likely that it was a secondary, unrelated issue. Airlines don't just "think" something is fixed, and captains dont just accept aircraft "assuming" its good to go.
