Some Indonesian Carriers To Move From CGK To HLP

Hi everyone.

The Jakarta Post reported on Jun 25 that several of the local Indonesian airlines is planned to move their operations from Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) airport to the airport's predecessor Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP).

The airlines that are planning to set up operations in HLP includes Citilink, the low cost arm of GA. Batik Air, full service unit of Lion Air. State-owned Merpati is also planned to shift their operations.

As far as I know, HLP is currently used for charter and private flights. In addition to some military and VIP traffic into Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.

While I feel it is good move by the Civil Aviation Authority to reduce the overflow of traffic in CGK, I was puzzled that Citilink is one of the carriers shifted to HLP. Wouldn't it be more reasonable if it stays under one roof with its parent Garuda?

Anyone would like to share their views on this issue?

It's May already and no signs of the airlines moving their operations to HLP. I also doubt HLP's terminal and parking space can handle the flow of the passengers.

I don't think HLP will be ready to handle such traffic. They are not physically fit to handle such operation.

Honestly I agree with you all. Although the idea of reducing excess traffic at CGK is good, I doubt that HLP is ready to handle such operations once these carriers start their operations.

In regards to parking space, was their capacity that inadequate to handle these carriers, if I remembered correctly they used to be the gateway to Indonesia? Terminal and passenger facilities wise, I guess there will be a lot of work to be done to accommodate these carriers.

I don't have the statistics but I guess at that time only a handful of foreign airlines served HLP and most of them only flew there a few times a week.

Not if Garuda is trying to differentiate Citilink from the parent company, and does not offer connections between the two carriers.

Citilink is Garuda by share ownership only... But Citilink's Jakarta operations alone won't be able to be handled by HLP.

The terminal's internal layout has been changed over the past almost 30 years...
The baggage claim hall is now absolutely tiny with 2 - 3 baggage carousel only.
The check-in hall only has space to cater for Citilink should it move...
The boarding gates have had more than 50% of its space taken up by Enggang Air and Premiair's FBO lounge.
The parking stands at HLP is taken up by business jets and other general aviation stuff... the number of large business jets here are growing (and they park them at HLP because CGK doesn't want them there)... and there is about another 25 aircraft waiting to move to be based at HLP.
The southern apron is also full for long term aircraft parking.
Most of not all the dead airplanes have been moved off the paved aprons...
And we're beginning to be short of parking spaces in HLP.
The circuit pattern is generally full in early mornings and late afternoon with the Air Force and flying schools.
When the President flies in and out... the airport shuts down for about 1-3hours at a time, including the terminal... he seems to not want to use the Air Force's VIP terminal...

But all that said... the regulations limiting HLP operations have been lifted and that the terminal is going to get a revamp... however I don't think there'll be a major move like it was planned before.

I guess that's true enough, however thinking that they would be run under two separate airports just seems unusual.

Thanks, I understand the international traffic they handled three decades ago is not a match with today's traffic at CGK.

Mandala499 thanks for the clarifications. I was not aware that the terminal layout has been revamped (or maybe downsized?) over the years. The lack of parking and terminal space does that you outlined seems to conclude our doubts of HLP ability to handle the traffic.

Even with the legal restrictions lifted, it seems to be inflexible to run commercial flights out of HLP with the shared VIP and Air Force traffic, now I doubt that airlines would like these arrangement offered to them.

Although the piece of news seems convincing but I guess movement of the mentioned airlines from CGK to HLP would not be as soon as indicated in the article.
