Admirals Club & The New AA

I haven't seen much on this topic, but I wonder how the new AA will brand Admirals Club.

--I hope Admiral's Club will be the name moving forward. However, nothing would surprise me considering both UA and Delta changed their club names. Which by the way, both Red Carpet Club and Crown Room were better names/branded products than United Club (super boring, but not surprising considering UA's lack of brand creativity since its merger) and Sky Club.

--Do we anticipate any openings/closings as a result?

They're finishing up the expansion of the ORD G concourse club now. I haven't been in so I'm curious what they did aside from making it bigger. Not sure about any of the other clubs, though.

I too am curious to see how the clubs are branded. The Admirals Club branding goes back a very long time and it'd be a shame to see it go, but I guess all options are on the table. The US Airways Club doesn't have a very large footprint these days, and outside of the hub cities (PHX, PHL, CLT, DCA) doesn't add many new locations to the overall network. BDL, GSO, BUF and TPA are the only other stations with a US club but no current Admirals Club.

Of all the Admirals Clubs that have closed over the last decade (and there have been a lot of closures) this is the one that I think has the greatest shot at reopening (just my opinion, not based on any fact.) The Concourse G club was developed as part of the "Admirals Club Service Center" concept AA developed in the late 90s and early 00s. These were supposed to be scaled-down clubs without conference rooms or showers or the other amenities of large clubs. DFW's Terminal B club is the only other Service Center I'm aware of. That made sense back when American Eagle was only 30% of AA's operation at ORD, but today it accounts for 60% and Concourse G handles a LOT more traffic than was envisioned in 2000. They have a layout rendering up and the new club will be more than twice as big. It'll also have a bar area, conference space and much larger bathrooms.

The first half of the new club opened last week, albeit with a temporary bar area and no bathrooms. The existing club was closed and is being remodeled. The staff told me they hoped everything would be finished by late summer.

By "anyone" do you mean just oneworld partners, or all airlines?

I wonder if this is a trend of the future. I'm sure there are some synergies by having one large club that handles all airlines, or do this in cities where an airline doesn't want their own club such as AA in SEA.

Wished they'd do that for Denver. I think it's crazy that Delta doesn't have a Sky Club there.

You're right, that's my mistake. I would definitely expect the PIT club to be converted to whatever marque the merged company decides to go with.

The quote from the agenda presentation says:

"the airlines requested that the Authority pursue engaging a third party to develop and operate a common use lounge that also could be used by American and BA passengers."


(JAL would obviously be included now; they did not serve SAN in early 2012.)

The way I interpret it (given the use of the term "common use") is that the lounge would be available to any passenger at the airport (willing/able to pay the entrance fee.) The size of the new lounge will apparently be 5,100 sq ft.

I don't know if this is a new trend or this is just a unique situation here in San Diego. There is a story behind why this is happening here so my guess is it's more of a local issue than an industry-wide change but it will be interesting to see if more and more of this type of facility appear elsewhere. It is mentioned in the presentation that ALD has developed common-use lounges already in LAS, DFW, RDU, ATL and MCO. So there are at least some others out there.

BTW, SAN does still have DL and UA lounges (and hopefully a Board Room will be announced and opened by AS soon as well!)

I agree. The combined AA/US operation at IAH should merit an Admiral's Club (and I don't think the name will change with the merger, "Admiral's Club" is just too good to muck with).

After all, UA has a Club at DFW, between E6 and E7, open daily from 0430-2030. Why shouldn't AA have a lounge at IAH?

The SAN AC Is currently being expanded. The expansion opens in Sepetmber.

Plans to make it a generic club - which SAN officials tried to force feed down AA's throat - are long dead.

The SAN AC is currently undergoing a large expansion that opens in September. SAN officials tried very hard to actually get the AC shut down in favor of a generic lounge, but AA won out in the end. But SAN official did indeed actually give AA an eviction notice. Left a very bad taste in AA's mouth.

Me too - however club members can use the AS Board Rooms, so they still have access to a lounge, just not an AA branded one.

It is decent, again mostly average. I like the H/K club much more at ORD. I would hope that they keep the adimirals club brand.

The Admirals Club was the first airport lounge in the world; the brand predates that of any other airline. I hope AA doesn't just throw that history away.

I think you will see the name Admirals Club remain because it has a lot of historical value but in trend with other airlines, the separate logo of five stars will most likely go away.

A majority of airlines do not maintain a totally separate brand for their clubs.

Thanks for the update on the situation Mark. With the large OneWorld presence now at SAN, including our 2 major intercontinental routes/cx, it was very upsetting to think of the long-time AC being here no more. I am happy that the situation got reversed and glad to be corrected on this.

And that goes for a lot of aspects of AA's history that have left a huge imprint on the entire industry. Brands like Admirals Club, AAdvantage, etc., plus flight numbers like flight 1, etc. are really worth retaining. I hope, and suspect, such historic aspects of AA will continue to be part of the "new AA" post-merger.
