Tampa's Terminal B

I'm currently in a room at the Tampa Airport Marriott. The hotel is part of the airport. Outside my window I can see a runway and three of the six terminals at this airport. Termianal A & C are being used by a variety of airlines, but Terminal B stands empty. I looks as though it hasn't been used in a long time. The "People Movers" look like they've not been used as well. The entrance to the terminal is blocked off from the main building. What is the history of this terminal and why is is not only unused, but uncared for? Were the Eastern gates locted here?

I think Eastern was located there but I wouldn't swear to it.....I will have to go look at some old TPA maps I have.

If your room faced the other way, you would see that Airside E is also empty. The long term plan is to replace B and E, then do the same with C and D.

Tampa has 6 "airsides" all radiating around a central terminal, connected by monorails. The rundown is:

AIRSIDE A:
Continental
Gulfstream Air (operating as Continental Connection)
America West (Handled by Continental)
Northwest (moved to A to be with alliance partner CO, used to be in Airside D)
Southwest

AIRSIDE B:
No longer in use

AIRSIDE C:
Delta Air Lines (main airline here)
Midway (handled by Delta)
Air Canada
TWA

AIRSIDE D:
United
Air Tran
Spirit
(formerly Northwest, now in Airside A)

AIRSIDE E:
Not in use

AIRSIDE F:
International Terminal
US Airways
US Airways Express
MetroJet
American
American Eagle
British Airways
Condor
Caymen Airways
Air Aruba
any other international charters (eg Martinair)

Airside B and D were used by Eastern and PanAm, but are no longer in use. They are completely rundown. Terminal B might look ok, but Terminal E has no jetways, etc.

The plan is to:
-knock down B and E and rebuild them new
-move D airlines to E and C airlines to B
-knock down C and D and rebuild them new

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, just post.

By the way, I'm working on an unoffical webpage for Tampa Int'l. I give you the address when I'm done

Thanks for the info. I'd like the address to that site. I was actually wrong about what airsides I saw out my window. Now in the light of the next day I can see that the empty terminal is "E", not "B" as I thought. In fact, I can see the old gate numbers: 66, 68, 7, etc. There are old white jetways, but they look like they haven't been used in years.

I've only been working on the website for about a week or two in my free time. I'll get it up once I get most of it done, but that won't be for a little while. I'll post a message on this message board once I get the website up.

Thanks,

TPA is my home airport.

B and E are not being used, and have not been used for a while...BUT....

the aviation athority has decided to renovate them both for future traffic...so its good news...but, there is an asbestos problem, so it might be a while

eastern used airside e from what i can remember, and so did pan am

hope this helps

I was on a trip in TPA about 3 years back. I don't remember seeing any aircraft when I went on the People mover. When I took off for MSP there was a bit of terminal was decaying.
