Whoa, it had to happen. Aloha has cut 25% of it's flights from it's regular schedule and has ended service from Maui to the Big Island.
Hawaiian will probably follow soon, they're going to make thier decision tonight.
The airports are really empty here in Hawaii. I never thought I would miss the thousands of Japanese tourists that visit Hawaii, but I do. It seems that everyone is afraid to fly and tourism is way down.
There are some hotels on the Big Island with only 4% occupancy. My sister works at the Four Seasons on the Big Island and she says it's almost totally empty.
Hawaii is more vulnerable to air travel slumps that most other states and we'll suffer greatly for the tragedy that happened half way around the world from us.

Forgive me for not knowing Hawaii aviation, but if both Aloha and Hawaiian cancel, who flies from Maui to the Big Island?

If they cancel this service, you have to fly to Honolulu first, then take a flight from there to the Big Island. It adds about 2 hours to a flight that normally takes about 20 minutes. They didn't have too many flights to begin with, but they were always pretty full.

Pacific Wings flies OGG-big island (Kamuela, not kona). And Island Air could pick that route up from its sister company if the demand was there.
Has JAL, NW, UA, ANA, CO restarted Asia Service (I sit not on the beach, but in a muggy Mississippi valley 4126 Aviators miles away). I know that JAL use to fly in 3-6 747s/DC-10s daily from different Japanese cities, along with their KOA service.
