Varig will reduce the 737-200 Adv routes and frequencies to United States. Probably Varig will cut a some domestic routes.
Varig hasn't said the which are the routes that they will be eliminate.

Varig was already loosing quite a lot of money before the closure of U.S. air space last week. RJ do you know how many 737s they plan on getting rid of? Just a few weeks ago they were adding more 737s.

I wonder how the LAX-Tokyo and LAX-Nagoya flights are doing? The Japanese economy wasn't doing too well either and now I pressume it's going to get much worst. That combined with the U.S. market is going to hit those flights hard. However, on the positive side, Varig's first 777 has been seen in Seattle and is waiting for delivery next week. I can't wait to see them here in LAX as I'm pretty sure that they will be flying them on their Brazil-California-Japan flights. I will miss their beautiful MD-11's flying over the city on their way from Asia though.  Sad

I doubt that the Brazil-Japan market will be affected any worse than the US-Japan market. There are lots of Brazilian businessmen and Brazilian-Japaneese travelers who need to get between the 2 countries. Those passengers would rather fly on a direct Varig flight from Brazil-LAX-Japan than have to deal with changing airlines or changing planes. Although Japan Air offers the same service via JFK, if I were a Brazilian I´d feel better flying on a Brazilian airline with a Brazilian crew that I knew spoke my language.

Long live Varig and Star-Alliance.

Since Varig has the only daily nonstop to Brasil from LAX, I would think they would keep this route. I'm also looking forward to seeing Varig's 777 and hopefully it will fly on the routes that Latinplane mentioned. I do hope that they do not park them in the desert after delivery. The777Man

I also wish Varig and their employees the best and since I work for UA I know the feeling of anxiety. I hope that I get to keep my job. It's too early too tell but I hope that my six and a half years of seniority will help me. The777Man

The777Man:

Varig has two daily flights to LAX, one is nonstop and the other is vìa Lima. The first route is served by a MD-11 and the second by a 767-300ER or sometimes a MD-11.

RJ_Delta: I'm fully aware of Varig's schedule to LAX since I see them here on a daily basis. They only have one NONSTOP to Brazil like I mentioned in my post. Any idea where they will fly the 777 first ? The777Man

I may be wrong, but I would say that droping 737-200 routes is probably a reflex of competition from TAM (actually the largest Brazilian domestic carrier) and competition from other smaller carriers such as Gol.

Erj190:

Is possible that Varig take the this oportunity to drop the 737-200 Adv. However Varig is consider to retire the 737-200 from his fleet in a short time.
I think that Varig join the facts.
