Hola! We haven´t discussed Mexican aviation in a while.

According to a Mexican newspaper (in Spanish)

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/finanz...3/china-mexico-turismo-936875.html

The Minister of Tourism is negotiating new routes between China and Mexico. AM already has a two weekly MEX-TIJ-PVG but clearly this is not enough. The article mentions that CX is considering HKG-MEX with a stop in GDL, and HU is envisaging PEK-MEX or PEK-CUN; the obvious challenge being MEX altitude.

On another front AM is flying 9 weekly MEX-GRU with 777s, I guess this is the stellar route even more so that MEX-MAD?

LAN recently increased frequency on the SCL-MEX route to 8x weekly due to AM's temporary suspension of services to SCL. Also, LAN will double flights on the SCL-CUN-MIA route from 2x weekly to 4x weekly for the high season. Starting on 21AUG13, TAM will operate the GRU-MEX route as overnight flights in both directions:
JJ8112 GRU 01:35 MEX 09:15 A332 Daily
JJ8113 MEX 19:50 GRU 07:10+1 A332 Daily

Interesting. I gather from the article that Cathay Cargo is likely going to launch HKG-GDL-MEX and that may evolve into passenger service later. Interesting. I also find it very interesting that HU is in talks to launch MEX from PEK. I wonder if they are thinking about a tech-stop at ANC or if HU is thinking about finding a suitable stopover airport in the U.S. or Canada from where it could have fifth-freedom rights. As Wingedtaurus said, altitude is the biggest problem.

Quoting SCL767 (Reply 1):
AM's temporary suspension of services to SCL.

Oh! When did that happen? I suppose it is a result of the MAD tailstrike. I suppose SCL will be reinstated with 767ERs once AM starts receiving 788s.

Quoting wingedtaurus (Thread starter):

Quite possibly. The Spanish economy is not helping. The summer season will probably see high fares between MAD and MEX and very healthy loads for AM, but who knows how it was during the late winter and during the spring, and how it will be once the school year restarts in Mexico.

Update: Cathay Pacific Cargo is indeed launching GDL 2x weekly via ANC. There is now a separate thread active on this new route.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Perhaps, but MEX-MAD is being also flown 10 weekly during the summer. However those three extra flights are flown by 767s as AM021/022. Anyway, it seems to be more productive for Aeromexico to increase Madrid instead keeping Santiago during these months.

Last month AM temporarily suspended services to SCL due to lack of wide-body a/c and rebooked pax on code-share flights operated by LA.

AM will resume the MEX-SCL route twice weekly starting on 10SEP13 with the 767-200. During October, AM will revert the MEX-SCL route back to 4x weekly utilizing both the 767-200 and 767-300ER.

Very true Ghost, plus doesn´t EZE get also a 9 weekly?

I´m sure the Mexico-China is a priority the catch is how to do it, some blogs were mentioning HKG-SJD-MEX instead of HKG-GDL-MEX. I have always wondered why KE who is a Skyteam member does not launch ICN-MEX and takes advantage of the Asian routes.

Last but not least AM is starting new international service to Guatemala City, with 3 weekly Tapachula – Guatemala City operation, on board Embraer ERJ145 aircraft.

AM will introduce their 787-8 serivce in the MEX-LHR route in July 2014. They will also change the dreadful schedule paricularly the LHR-MEX leg, the new timetable is:

AM007 MEX2315 – 1615+1LHR 788 37
AM007 MEX2355 – 1655+1LHR 788 6

AM008 LHR2230 – 0505+1MEX 788 147

I hope they can get more slots to make it daily. It´s good to see AM competeing with the European carriers using the 777 and 787.

The MEX-EZE route increases to 10x weekly during November and December. During December and January, LA will add 12 additional frequencies on the SCL-MEX route.

I also find it very interesting that HU is in talks to launch MEX from PEK.

I think this has been on the cards for a while now. I suppose HU would prefer to fly straight to CUN and then to MEX, because of the altitude issue. But in my opinion that would depend on the authorization for that huge Chinese pryect (the name escapes me) for the Mayan Riviera region. Besides, It´s PVG the financial center, I don´t think the yields to PEK would be as attractive.

Quoting EddieDude (Reply 2):
about finding a suitable stopover airport in the U.S. or Canada from where it could have fifth-freedom rights. As Wingedtaurus said, altitude is the biggest problem.

The problem, as always, although a lot of people says it ain´t so, is the VISA issue with Canada and the US. I don´t know if Canada allows transit without VISA but the US doesn´t. In any case, unless the China flight stops on a city that is not important to AM, I doubt any airline would get fifth freedom on the route. Remember the MH issue.

Quoting EddieDude (Reply 2):
Oh! When did that happen? I suppose it is a result of the MAD tailstrike.

I do think that it was planned, even before the loss of that aircraft.

That is great news.

Quoting wingedtaurus (Reply 5):

I think so. That route is always full and as it stands, it´s a monopoly. Unfortunately the yields are not too high and they are very seasonal. This time of year, you´ll be hard pressed to find a seat MEX-EZE.

Quoting wingedtaurus (Reply 5):
I have always wondered why KE who is a Skyteam member does not launch ICN-MEX and takes advantage of the Asian routes.

My guess, and only that, a guess, is that KE won´t do it unless they can get a stop over in LAX with fifth freedom, which of course is not goint to happen.

Quoting Marcus (Reply 7):

A friend of mine, VERY close to AM´s ops told me the pilots received the wrong weight and balance calculations. But that´s all I know.

It is well known that the MEX-SCL route is not a great performer for AM. IMHO, AM may eventually decide to leave the Chilean market. LA is ready to operate the SCL-MEX route 9x weekly should AM leave the Chilean market.

It doesn't. Its free though, but that isn't much help, you have to go through the process. I guess a big thank you is in order to those thousands of airheads that thought requesting asylum in Canada was such a great idea   . There went the Visa free access for Mexican passport holders.

That is great news! Seems that the rate at which 788s will be delivered is quite brisk. That will leave SCL, in case it is restarted, as the only long-haul destination that does not receive 77Es or 788s. Anyone has a schedule of deliveries of 788s and retirements of 767ERs?

I don't know how it works, but remember that China is a regulated market and maybe HU can only operate internationally ex-PEK and other secondary airports, but not PVG. Again, this is just an assumption, but it might be accurate.

Yes, but remember the huge Argentine diaspora in MEX, and it is Summer here. Besides, around July, kids get 3 weeks off school in Argentina. And they do travel far, since the mountains and the beaches are pretty much off-limits.

Quoting EddieDude (Reply 12):

Yes. But I suspect they weren´t really interested. After all, it did not work out for AM. They want LAX.

For the Holiday season LA will add 12 additional weekly frequencies on the SCL-MEX route. If AM were to suspend service to SCL indefinitely, LA will add another weekly frequency on the SCL-MEX route. The route currently operates 8x weekly.

I got myself a copy of Airways magazine and I was surprised to read that Aeromar finally got two ATR-72-600 (leased from ILFC) and that they'll get rid of four ATR-42-320

The CRJ fleet is still just two examples strong. I can imagine they're not the cheapest aircraft to operate for an airline like VW. I wonder what the strategy is.

Also, I'm almost certain I saw an Interjet A320 with winglets on final approach to MEX last week.

What has happened to our Mexican aviation threads guys? You know it's bad when you get the news by looking at the actual new planes rather than in A.net months in advance

Yes, I read on their website that they had received two ATR 72-600s in May of this year. I wonder if they plan on replacing the 42s with 72s (totally or partially).

I suppose they count on the CR2s for flights to the United States. I flew to MFE on board a VW CR2 last March and it was a nice flight. If they are planning to launch MEX-AUS and other routes to the U.S., they will need/want to use CR2s for all or some of them.

In November Volaris will add two more destinations to their route map. Y4 will connect TIJ to Ciudad Obregon (CEN) 2x weekly and San Luis Potosi (SLP) 1x weekly. SLP will also get flights to CUN 1x weekly. With CEN and SLP being added, Volaris will connect TIJ to 27 cities in Mexico.

SLP-CUN starts November 6
SLP-TIJ starts November 3
CEN-TIJ starts November 5

Good to see Y4 continue their expansion at TIJ. Hopefully they do connect OAK and SJC to the TIJ operation. It gives their customers in the bay area more options to connect to the rest of Mexico.

Speaking about Y4 in Tijuana, the airline is essentially centralized on operating domestic operations nowadays.
Good to see if Y4 would break their instincts when they'll serve TIJ internationally.
