SJC has two parallel runways: 30L and 30R, with the terminals being on the side of 30R. In normal operations, aircraft depart 30R and land 30L. However over the past week, all departures seem to be off 30L, and some landings as well. Does anyone know the reason for this?
And in general, when airports have a pair(s) of parallel runways (LAX is another example), is their a reason that the runway closer to the terminals is usually the departure runway, while the outer runway(s) with respect to the terminal ramp area is the arrival runway. Given that either way, either landings or takeoffs must cross and active runway, why is this the norm these days?

If you think about the logistics of the traffic flow, it makes sense for departures to be from the runway closest to the terminal and for the landing flights to be on the runway further away. That way, an airplane can be in position and holding on the departure runway without having to cross in front of landing traffic.
Yes, the landing traffic will need to cross the departure runway, but since an airplane that is lining up to depart is moving slowly, there is more of a margin for safety than if a taxiing airplane has to cross the landing runway.
