Pullmantur Air 744 Opf Vueling.

For the past week or so, a 477-seater 747-400, EC-LNA, has been based at BCN operating Vueling (flies A32xs) flights, mostly to ARN but occasionally to MAD. Here are my questions :

1) Is a 747 listed on Vueling.com operating the concerned flights or are there only 180 seats sold and are there 300 empty seats on each flight it operates?

2) Planespotters.net lists 26 C-class seats on the aircraft. Are those empty on the Vueling flights.

3) Why would Vueling contract with Pullmantur and wet-lease 747s, wouldn't there be a cheaper option?

4) How long is this going to be going on?

5) Why does Vueling need to wet-lease any aircraft?

I can imagine that some people here are going to want to get on those flights  

Just for background, there are four 747s in the Pullmantur fleet. One is currently operating for Saudia while the two others are operating regular company flights.

Its been at ARN on four afternoons this week. Each day it operated the evening flight, and the afternoon flight was cancelled. So it carried 360 pax each time.
Perhaps there is a shorthage of ACMI widebodies. We have had an A330 wet lease previously when this has happened.

Summer holiday traffic everywhere. Almost all flights and trains are heavily overbooked. I'm surprised they're flying 744s only to ARN and MAD.

The B744 for ARN is used to carry the passengers for several Pullmantur cruise ships in the Baltic Sea as well as for the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, seats are available for Vueling passengers boarding in BCN to ARN, as the flight does not get fully booked with the cruise passengers. The VY codeshare on this flight is in part due to an agreement between VY and the Swedish Tourism Authorities in order to promote the route and offer more seats between ARN and BCN during the summer season.

Also, between MAD and BCN no passengers are carried, plane is just positioned for maintenance in Madrid.

Vueling has used the Pullmantur aircraft for ARN, the 744 with registration EC-LNA, for an exceptional flight from Barcelona to Tenerife North (Canary Islands) and return. The reason was that one VY A320 went tech and the flight to TFN was cancelled. The passengers were surprised for sure.

Spotters in TFN were aware of this, as it is not that common to see widebodies at this airport. Currently Air Europa's A330 is the only widebody that can be seen at TFN, and in the past Iberia used the A340 and the B747 for this destination from Madrid.
