As long as their OneWorld partner, Cathay Pacific's service is better than theirs, probably not.
CX has plans to fly nonstop to Chicago next year, instead of New York. However, NY flights will still be served with its onestop service via Vancouver.

United Airline- It is still good to have the rights because what if AA and CX were to split(this is very doubtfull, I know, but I was saying "what if") than AA would need to get some marketshare. Also, what if AA wants to start it in the future from a point that is not served by Cathay Pacific? Right now with the financial trouble they are in, I don't see any new routes being started up unless it is an obvious cash cow.

Hell no! Why would they start any HKG service when a lot of other international service is being axed? I doubt HKG would be any better right now than TPE is.....

I guess not... since AA stops at Narita (NRT) Tokyo, AA will stick in this way instead of opening a new route. Both JAL and CX have connection flights from HKG to NRT.

before everything happend, AA was intrested in flying DFW-HKG non-stop, they were waiting for a longer range plane than the 777-200IGW, but i havent heard much about a longer range 777 in a while.

Jiml1126,
Why would any airline cut a route that is making money? It does not make sense, especially in the current climate, where any source of income is likely to be closely guarded.
