Varig Brazilian Airlines who years ago got rid of their B747s because of their bad financial situation, will be flying them again. They are planned to fly into JFK, NY sometime in late October.

Where did you hear this from? This would be a surprize as VARIG has already announced a reduction in the MD-11 fleet (currently their largest aircraft) due to the current downturn. Re-intrducing 747's would seem to contradict this and the current market downturn. They also have 777's on order.

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

This surprised me as well, considering that their financial situation is now worse than ever. However i was told by a Varig employee that they were scheduling about seven or so flights with the B747 during the month of October of this year.

This is my theory. Maybe they are expecting a big surge in passengers since United/Continental/American all cancelled or will be cancelling their JFK/EWR-GRU/GIG routes. They'll probably be flying elsewhere as well, but all i was told was that they would be coming into NY in October.

Good news from an airline connected with only bad news in the last years. If true.

Considering the US carrier cutbacks to South America, the cheaper cost of 747s right now compared to MD11s and the glut of 747s as Fed Ex was buying MD11s like crazy. The lease of a 747 is around anywhere from 50-73% of that of an MD11. (Depending on model and condition) Of course early classic 747s are pennies on the dollar compared the MD11 acquisition costs.

I highly doubt that Varig will actually be doing this. Varig was loosing a lot of money before the accidents of Sept 11 ($150 million last year) and they have just formally announced that they will reduce their fleet from 93 to 80 aircraft a 14% reduction. At the same time the expected increase of flights to the U.S. has been thrown out the door. Varig needs to refocus on becoming profitable again in order to keep it's place as the leader in Latin America and Brazil. It is not logical to acquire used 747s when you have a new 777 being delivered next week. So don't expect Varig to return with 747 to the skies any time soon.
