Prior to their 1995 conversion to an all-pax layout, what routes did Qantas used to operate with their 747-200 Combi aircraft?

Also, what configuration were these aircraft in?

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

I know that they used to do NRT, PPT, LAX and HNL.

From memory (a trip on one to LAX when I was a kid) I'm pretty sure they had economy class on the upper deck though I could be mistaken.

Again - going from memory - they only had 2 Combi's.

VH-ECB "City of Swan Hill"

VH-ECC "City of Shepparton"

Both ended up converted to full passenger configurations and ECB ended up with Air Canada and ECC with Air Pacific before both being retired.

Apologies if any of the information above is incorrect or slightly wrong.

They were regulars in AKL, even after they were all pax configs in the late 90s and even into the 00s I think. QF43/44..

The B743 Combi ( Extended Upper Deck) fleet was utilised on various routes;

SYD-HNL-SYD
SYD-FCO-SYD (I'm a little rusty but I believe the flight operated via SIN)
SYD-AKL-SYD
SYD-AKL-LAX
SYD-NRT-SYD
SYD-PER, MEL-PER

The aircraft operated the odd SIN service too.

The question was about QF's three 742 Combis. They didn't operate the 743 Combi according to any fleet list I can find. All their 743s were full passenger aircraft, at least those delivered new by Boeing.

I know they operated the 742 Combi to LAX via HNL at one time.

Viscount is correct, VH-EBT thru EBY were all full pax aircraft.

Wasn't there a third combi ECA? I believe it was P&W powered whilst the other two were RR powered. This is the one which went onto fly with AC.

They both left QF service and went to the desert direct.

QF had 3 742 combis, ECA which had Pratt power and ended up with AC and the 2 RR powered aircraft which ended being converted to full pax config as previously mentioned.

Destinations that I can remeber include POM, HKG, NRT, AKL, NAN, HNL, PPT, LAX and SFO. I'm pretty sure that they also went to FRA which would've been via SIN or BKK and BAH as they wouldn't have had the range to go nonstop to FRA in combi mode.

Got to fly on all 3 as Combis and also the 2 RR aircraft after their conversion. Will always remember flying SYD/PPT/LAX on VH-ECC, one of the longest take off runs I'd ever experienced from SYD, the gorgeous scenery on approach to PPT and the skinny cats all through the terminal in PPT !

As above ECA went to AC and was P/W powered. EBR was with FJ from around 1996 till 2003 and EBQ spent sometime at FJ around 1998/2000 before returning to QF.
