I don't see the point in closing observation areas. If they close these then why not perimeter roads, multi-story car parks, etc.? If a terrorist were to go up on the observation area at LHR with some sort of weapon don't you think that people would overpower him? Closing observation areas won't stop terrorists, it'll just ruin things for enthusiasts.

Greenjet - with you 100%. Neither enthusiasts nor indeed photographers pose any threat to aviation or airline security. Having people around very much reduces the chances of an attack. But of course, many people in the security industry are going for effect.
Bombayhog - very pleased to report: LHR (and Mach III aviation shop - well worth a visit!) open. Only closed for eight days.
