I wonder if Continental airlines flight CO98/99 still using polar routing, the reason why i come to this, i 've seen CO98 to EWR passing the airspace near Anchorage, that supposed to be the old and longer routing for north america flights from asia.

can anyone confirm that

It can still use polar routing and then go south over Anchorage.

CO uses polar routing from EWR to HKG. 15 hours - 40 minutes or so.. The reverse - CO 98 uses traditional routing with tail winds. The flight time is usually the same.

Reasons for using traditional routing on return (my guess): Avoid paying user fees for Russian airspace. Safer route (more alternates) and less solar radiation.

There were times last year when CO 99 used traditional longer route -- I believe due to solar flares. The flight was time was significantly longer.

Are you sure it wasnt the Narita flight that you saw over anchorage ?, most times I have done this flight we came in over Alaska. When I did the 98/99 we were nowhere near anchorage on the way in or out

Considering that CO 99 was launched on March 1 THIS YEAR, that would have been pretty damn impossible wouldn't it?

I flew 99 during the solar flare time, and it is true that the flight was significantly longer. I dont recall the exact time, but it was around 17 + hours.

Since September 11, Everything before seems like at least "last year"... But you are correct, I meant to state earlier this year. I believe it was in the April timeframe.
