Lufthansa A330 Slide Off Taxiway DFW Airport

Watching the news Live on Channel fox here and it show a Lufthansa A330 looks like it slide off the taxiway at DFW Airport.

It's been a mess here. There were over 1000 cancelled flights at DFW yesterday and only 1 of the 7 runways were in use.

Apparently the plane went off the taxiway last night / yesterday afternoon - 13 to 18 hours ago - and has been stuck since.

The pax were taken off after about an hour.

Now with daylight and no new freezing precip falling for a couple more hours, they are trying to thaw things out and get it moved.

After a quick check, this aircraft looks to be D-AIKA. It was mid teens overnight, still just mid 20s here in N. Ft Worth.

The Fox story is confusing. It states it happened after the plane had landed at 9 pm, but I saw it land and it certainly wasn't 9. Perhaps it happened on the way to the runway for the flight back to FRA.

This must have happened yesterday evening. I had been listening to DFW Tower and the crew was hesitant to taxi across the bridge to 35L, which was at the time the only operational runway. The crew wanted to taxi down the length of 36L (I believe) to inspect its condition, at which point it probably got stuck maneuvering to or from the runway.


B-52s don't take off. They scare the ground away.

Is the flight an RON at DFW for the aircraft, or an in and out?

How strange. I suppose this can happen to anyone, but I would have thought LH crews had a lot of experience taxiing with these conditions.

"My" Lufthansa shows the inbound back to FRA from Dec 6 cancelled and flightaware's data is only an estimate. The hint is the question mark next to the arrival time. If you click on Graph for either altitude or speed, you'll see flightaware has no data whatsoever for the flight. A look at flightstat confirms the plane never took off last night.

Lufty had a positioning flight on the board back to FRA earlier today, but it seems to be gone now. More damaged than expected perhaps.

Something else interesting I just saw on the news. It said Qantas flight was cancelled last night, and Qantas let the passengers use the plane as their hotel. They could come and go all night. Qantas took care of the passengers giving them blankets and a place to sleep. I never heard of this before!?! Kudos for Qantas! Said flight only has 75 passenger. Light load for a 744.

DFW is not IAH or MCO or somewhere where ice/snow/freezing rain is extremely uncommon. DFW has on average 1-3 winter storm days per winter. Anyone remember the national shame that the winter storm that occured during the Super Bowl a few years ago caused?

Thus, it behooves DFW officials to plan early, plan ahead, and deal with these issues proactively and not act like some small airport like Abilene or Waco.

To have just one runway out of seven open...I mean C'mon. The precipitation has been over since basically 11am Yesterday!

I had an outbound flight out of Dallas....I knew better and cancelled my AA flight Thursday night and booked my WN flight which was only 1/2 hour late on Friday!!!

Also, has QF been cancelled two days in a row? 12/5 and 12/6? If I were DFW, I don't want to do anything to tick off these international carriers....

I'm curious how TSA and USCBP signed off on this. Were these passengers cleared entry into the US and then allowed to re-clear TSA (without a boarding pass?) to stay on the plane? Did they just leave the plane and not go through customs (not sure how that would happen)?

Without having all the costs at my disposal to give accurate information, surely every airport runs a cost/benefit analysis on the need for winter equipment. The equipment and supplies needed to successfully de-ice an airport and all its planes that size is very expensive. Is it better to just shut down the airport for a few days than to buy all of that stuff and have it collect dust for 363 days a year? DFW may be right on the borderline for having the need for de-icing supplies and equipment.

Edit: I should also mention that DFW's solution to taking care of the roads during an ice storm is to spread sand everywhere. Not salt, sand. The metroplex as a whole is unprepared to take care of its citizens during winter weather. What good is it to keep the airport open and operating fully when the whole market is going to have transportation issues getting to and from the airport?

But that "precipitation" resulted in multiple inches of ice/sleet over the top of all the runways. Plus, the temperature was just barely warm enough for much of it to melt before the mercury plunged overnight and caused everything to freeze solid. It's easy to remove snow, but to my knowledge there's no easy way to clear the runways of ice except manually scraping it off. That's 13,000 feet of concrete for each of the main runways completely covered, not to mention taxiways and ramps. With no road salt allowed due to the corrosion it causes, it's definitely been a long weekend for the crews at the airport.

I'm curious as to how, specifically, the airport could have done so much better than it has in terms of getting itself back on its feet.

I'm sure it was the passengers that were SYD bound...Why would QF be finding hotel rooms for passengers who are going to DFW and presumably have accommodations or onward connections - It sounds like an airline actually doing something nice even when they wouldn't have too. Kudos QF.

Quite a few of the 4,000+ people sleeping in the DFW terminals last night, and couple thousand sleeping there tonight have both accommodations and onward connections. If they had onward connections to any of the American Eagle outlying stations - they likely are stuck at DFW while maintenance crews try to chip 1 1/2 inches of hard double frozen ice off the planes without damaging anything.

Many passengers with DFW as their destination have been unable to get out of the airport because of cars stuck in ice, no public transportation options to their final destination, etc.

Fort Worth is shutting down all the freeways in the city tomorrow as they try to deal with 'cobblestone ice' - three to four inches thick on the overpasses.

Back on topic - I've seen nothing else on the DFW media about the LH plane this afternoo. I'm beginning to wonder if it wasn't a photo from Friday afternoon with some misunderstanding by the airport spokesman/ TV station. The plane might have been moved after only a couple hours and able to make the return to FRA several hours late on Friday.

Living in a state that regularly has ice storms (Oregon), I can say from experience they're really nasty. Everything stops for two or three days. It's not just some ice on the roads, it can be an inch of very slippery ice draped over everything, like a giant wet blanket that froze. Just walking out the front door is dangerous, never mind driving, or a plane moving around on the ground. And if nobody can get to the airport, what's the point of opening, especially if there aren't enough employees there anyway?

According to channel 8 and other news channels, this happened Friday night as they were taxiing to take-off. It was stuck all night. It didn't make the news until Sky 4 saw it Saturday morning when flying by the airport. They said it took 2 hours to get everyone off the plane.

Also here is a comment from someone who was on the plane via FlyerTalk. "I have a friend who was on that flight, it was taxing to take off when it got stuck in the ice. The airport sent several trucks to try to pull it out and those trucks also got stuck.
They ended up getting firefighters to get them off the plane and onto buses. They ended up flying BA today to get to their destinations."

A quick check on Lufthansa's website, shows the flight operating back to Frankfurt. Friday and yesterday's flight were cancelled. And today's outbound LH 438 (FRA-DFW) remains cancelled. So it looks like the aircraft that got stuck on Friday is leaving for Frankfurt today.
