As thread number 4 has been archived, I'll start thread number 5 of the never dull aviation scene in the BeNeLux. This year we'll probably see the finalisation of the Chinese taking a major equity stake in Cargolux, Ryanair going after Vueling and SN Brussels at BRU and we'll probably get an answer to the questions which BeNeLux airport will be the first airport wit pax service of all the three big ME3 airlines (AMS or BRU).

I'll start this thread by the press release of EIN that they have handled 3.4mio pax in 2013 (increase of 14%). For 2014 the expect 3.7mio. Total movements is expected to improve from 26,508 in 2013 to approx.29,000 in 2014.

Btw, please use either SN or Brussels Airlines. SN Brussels Airlines seized to exist in 2007 already

Qatar requested and received, as usual, slots for AMS for S14 (they've done this for the past few years) . Thus, if QR decides to finally use the slots they requested and granted, then AMS would be the first.

After EIN, AMS released their preliminary figures for 2013 (exact figures will be available shortly)

Passengers 52.5mio (+2.89%)
Cargo: 1.5mio ton
Movements: 426,000

Though some news reports suggest an increase of cargo of 3.5%, according to my figures this doesn't look not correct as 2012 ended just above 1.5mio (when you include post in the cargo figures) or just under 1.5mio in you exclude post. Will see what the exact figures will be....

KLM will start flights to Bilbao in S14. 5 times a week (with ERJ190 equipment). Seems a nice - and for me long expectd - new city in the route network.

How's the installation of the new WBC seats on the KLM 747s progressing? Any insight which routes have the new WBC? And when will the rest of the long haul fleet be updated?

Finally we got a clear overview about the 787/350 order partition at KL/AF. KL will go for 23 787s (how many of them are leased??) and 7 A350s (these will replace what). AF will go for 12 787s and 18 A350s...initially.

Surprising. But with the detailed yearly delivery schedule, the author seems to be in the know... Expected the number of 787s and A350s more equally balanced. Just 7 A350s, is it worth to have such a small subfleet? KL might as well go all 787... I guess the number of A350s will rise after a follow-on order to replace 77E's.

Quoting SASMD82 (Reply 7):
23 787s (how many of them are leased??)

I believe 10 787s will be leased, and judging by the delivery schedule, all will go to KL.

Also surprised to see just 276 seats in KL's 787-9... 14 seats less than the A333 and 44 less than the 77E... thought it was closer in size.

Quoting SASMD82 (Reply 7):

From what I read in earlier interviews with KL executives, this 787/A350 order will replace the 747Ms and A330s. Will be interesting to see what KL will do with full pax 747s... replace with more 77W's or perhaps 777-9s?

I think so too, but than not specifically for the 77E. I think in 2020 we will see a temporary fleet of 747, 747M, 77W, 77E, 789, A359, A333 and A332.

This means either the 789 is not as big as we thought it was. At least a good amount smaller than the A333/A343, MD-11 and 77E. Surprises me too, I thought the size was about the equivalent.

779, no until 2025 I don't expect this plane to be with KL/AF, hence they are no launch customer airlines (anymore) and their 77W are relatively young. Normally the A330s of KL don't need to be replaced before 2020 as well. So I expect the 772 to be replaced by a combination of 789 and 359.

It's usually a 777 (300ER   ) when EK starts a new route... A330s are on their way out, and seem to be not in best shape. Not the best visiting card to impress new passengers.
When EK has enough A350s, it will probably be the aircraft of choice for new routes.

Don 't get too excited as this is a seasonal flight only (and just a F70).

Other news

BRU ended at 19.33mio pax for 2013 (+0.9). Number of movements was 216,678 which is 3.4% less. Cargo ended 6.4% lower at 429,938 tons

LGG released its figures as well this week. Pax figures ended at 315,293 (+ 3.98%). Cargo was down 2.72% to 561,000 tons.

Simply because SQ's 77W is a premium product and AMS is not a premium route. It has 8P, 42J and 228Y seats. As you no doubt know, Dutch people are somewhat price sensitive, the market for P and J simply isn't big enough. Therefore, it makes better sense for SQ to send the 77E with 26J and 245Y seats to AMS.

We'll just have to wait until SQ replaces their 77E's with A359s...

Same situation with CX, they send their old A343s (2 class or 3 class with Y+), not their premium configured 77W's. Although I believe their plan is to eventually send a 3 class (with Y+) 77W to AMS.

SQ send their B77W to AMS in peak summer season and CX will introduce daily B77W 3-class service starting 2 jan. 2015. The CX B77W starts operating 3x/week in late October 2014, as the CX A340 is slowly withdrawn from service.

I saw they did last summer, hadn't seen anything in their schedule they're planning it again this summer. A bit surprising they send a plane with less Y seats but more J seats during summer season. You'd expect less premium demand in summer.

SQ sends their 77W to AMS for cargo. They usually don't sell the P cabin on those flights as P (they didn't do this previous years). Aircraft availability has also been a reason why SQ send their 77Ws to AMS in the past.

This is an annually recurring schedule adjustment for airlines from that region in a period of weak demand.

Flights are operated in codeshare with AZ.

Until last year AZ operated this route 2x/daily with A319 and E75 in codeshare with KLM.

This is the 2nd Alitalia regional route handed to KLM following the transfer of FLR-AMS-FLR from AZ to KLM late last year. The cost of operation of such regional routes for AZ must be the primary reason for the transfer, as AZ does not have a/c or crew bases in TRN or FLR.
