United Airlines is to start 777 service to Hawaii in Feb. 2000. The aircraft will seat 36 in United First and 312 in United Economy. It will fly the San Francisco (SFO) to Kahului (OGG) route.

If anyone doesn't believe me, it is on the UA website (http://www.ual.com) under Press Releases.

Finally, the best plane to the best state!

UA just ruined the plane by making it a domestic 2-class plane  .

Why does a 2 class layout spoil the 777? Does it mean less legroom?

I don't think that UA ruined it, maybe they needed a larger capacity airplane. I have flown the DC10 (-10 and -30) to Hawaii many times, and let me tell you, the planes were PACKED! Not one empty seat. Again, I don't think UA ruined it, as they still have the 777XI (w/ UF suite), and the standard 777XC. I like the 777, and I don't mind that UA is making it 2 class. Did they ruin the DC10-30 by making it 2 class? No. However they did ruin the 747-100s by making them 2 class. 450 people is too much for 1 airplane. 42 UF, 408 UE. Zone A and UD was UF, Zone B, C, D, E were UE.

Yea they really do need a larger capacity plane-not really to HNL, but to OGG.

UF Suite, 777XI/XC blah blah blah. They took such a classy aircraft with three cabins, and made it into a cattle car. Way to go UA  .

Of course they didn't ruin the 747-100 and DC-10-30---they were old rustbuckets that offered very little in the way of passenger amentities anyway, and to reduce them to a two-class plane is just fine.

How does the number of seats 'ruin' a plane?! Hitting the ground or being operated by Tower/ValuJet ruins a plane. The 777 is a great aircraft. Of course on it's introduction it is used on premium routes like San Francisco to London or Washington to Paris, but eventually it will be flying Denver to Philadelphia and O'Hare to Miami etc. BTW, 400-odd isn't too much for a plane. Have you ever flown JAL or ANA domestically? The more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned. I can rarely afford business class anyway, so it makes no odds.

I'm surprised that Maui has had such a boost in capacity, when I flew with UA from SFO to OGG last year it was all 757s.

I think it's about time 777's are going across the Pacific from the U.S .I think in a few yrs they will probably replace the DC-10's from Ord and Dfw with United and American. Also the Tri-stars from Atl with Delta....Anyone agree or disagree?

It's not the number of seats onboard, just the lack of class onboard the plane (I guess the chance of not getting a sleeper seat MIGHT have something to do with it!  ).

It would have been good of UA to replaced the 767-300 with a 747-200 on the OGG run...those OGG flights have been almost 100% full the entire year, and could easily support a '47 in addition to the '57.
