I was going over the financial records of the major US airlines during the 1970s and found some pretty interesting information. I chose 7 of the top airlines in the US at that time, the only one I couldn't find information about was Continental. Delta and Northwest had the enviable position of being able to make a profit every year. National also did well only losing money in 1970. For Braniff it was also a very good decade, they only lost money in 1970 and 1979, but when they start losing it in 1979 it's all down hill from there. In contrast Pan Am only made money in 1977, 1978 and 1979. It was not a stellar decade for TWA either, they lost money in 1970, 1974, 1975 and 1979, and their Pacific division lost money every year until it was finnally axed in 1975.

Here's how much net profit or loss they made throughout the decade:

1. Delta $935,997,000
2. Northwest $529,043,000
3. United $465,798,898
4. American $237,890,000
3. Braniff $169,218,000
4. Eastern $159,704,000
5. National $108,253,000
6. TWA $79,433,000
7. Pan Am -$23,304,000

And here are the losers and winners for each year:
1970: Northwest made $46,718,000, TWA lost $64,417,000.
1971: Delta made $34,160,000, Pan Am lost $46,501,000.
1972: Delta made $51,094,000, Pan Am lost $28,891,000.
1973: Delta made $74,993,000, Eastern lost $51,268,000.
1974: United made $92,211,000, Pan Am lost $81,774,000.
1975: Northwest made $43,396,000, TWA lost $86,278,000.
1976: Delta made $84,149,000, Pan Am (the only major to lose money that year) lost $10,806,000.
1977: Delta made $116,564,000, National had the smallest profit with $6,422,000.
1978: United made $287,218,000, National had the smallest profit with $18,309,000.
1979: Delta made $103,602,000, United lost $101,384,000.
