Hey guys! I am proud enough to acknowledge you guys, that I have met Patrick Tsai, Former Vice Chairman of Cathay Pacific a few days ago.
He believes that there is a space for both the Sonic Cruiser, as well as the A 380 in Cathay Pacific's fleet. However, he is VERY certain that Cathay Pacific will continue to operate the B 747-400 at least for the next 25 years.
And their 19 B 744s will not be leaving the fleet anytime soon, provided that their oldest B 744 is just 10 years old. Still new I would say......
'They may even order the B 747-400ER in the future', he said.
Also, he stated that the A 340-600, B 777-300 ER etc(Which they may order in the future), will only be a supplement to their B 747-400s, but not a replacement for it. If CX is going to dump their B 747-400s anytime in the future, they wouldn't have done so much to upgrade them.

Not surprising in view of that the B744 is a damn good aircraft and with the RR engines, probably very efficient per km flown, benchmarking against their competitors. Additionally, all the investment made by CX to incorporate these aircraft into their fleets (training, spares, engineering knowhow etc etc) make the cost of finding another alternative higher than it should be.

You are absolutely correct!
CX's B 744s will NOT be leaving anytime soon. In fact, they will probably order new B 744s.
And one more thing, the culture in Hong Kong is that........ People believe that the B 747 is the most comfortable aircraft on earth (Which it is!). And they think you are not good if you do not have the B 747. Remember, not everyone on earth are Aviation Enthusiasts like us and they do not know that the B 777 as well as the A 340 are also good aircraft.
