FAA To Annouce New Carry On Rules

CNN is reporting that the FAA will announce new carry on rules limiting passengers to only one bag and one personal use bag such as a purse or briefcase.

So much for quick trips off the plane.

Although this should make for faster boarding.

wait...then isn't this simply a two-bag policy? aren't people generally only supposed to take on a max of two bags, anyway? i can't quite tell the difference.

I second Ironminds. There will always be people who'll argue that their luggage is a their first carryon and their oversized duffle bag is their purse. The rules don't mean anything unless they're enforced.

That just means more checked luggage and less cargo. Cargo=$ pax bags are just useless weight. And I hate loading all those heavy bags.

These rules are supposed to be enforeced now at either the ticket-counter or the security checkpoint. If soemoen bypasses the counter, and has 2 carry-on's they're to be pointed back to the ticket counter to check the 2nd bag.

If the FAA is going to impose a one carry-on bag per passenger rule, then it should also require the airlines to improve the baggage claim service. To some extent, the airlines brought the carry-on baggage problem onto themselves with the slow return of bags at the destination. Passengers, particulary business travelers, fly because they are in a hurry and need to get to work, not to stand around waiting for their bags. There are some airlines and airports that have really good baggage claim service such as America West at PHX, American at DFW and DCA, and US Airways at DCA. But at BWI, which I normally use, the baggage service is pitiful. On Delta, passengers must wait at least 1 hour before the bags start coming up to baggage claim and usually the wait is at least 1 1/2 hours. Note that is before the bags start coming up, not necessarily when you will get your bag. The wait for bags from America West and Southwest is also at least an hour, and for Southwest passengers, this is after they hike from the B Concourse to the international arrivals (E) concourse. Retrieving bags from America West and Southwest is further compounded because they do not announce what carousels will have bags from what flights. This results in hundreds of passengers running back and forth between the two carousels checking baggage tags. With more people having to check their luggage, the problem will only be worse than it is right now. The airlines are crying that they are hurting for business. If we are going to be limited to one carry-on bag and check the other bag(s), then the airlines should improve their baggage claim service so we can retrieve our luggage in a timely manner. There is no reason why passengers should wait for 1 1/2 hours for their luggage after a 1 hour flight, or any flight for that matter. I have found that with the travel restrictions imposed since September 11th, it is now quicker and easier to drive from BWI and DCA to destinations such at PIT and NYC (Amtrak is a great alternate to the shuttles). With all of the security issues that are causing delays, if the airlines do not improve their baggage claim service, they are only going to increase the radius of how far one must drive before it actually becomes faster to fly, though not convienent.

I got to go with the FAA on this one. I think the idea here is to lessen the long lines at security check points now as well as to make it a tad more difficult for someone to try and smuggle something in their carry on bags.

Making it an FAA requirement pretty much eliminates arguments for the airlines with stubborn or pushy pax trying to take three carry ons.

You already have to show up at the airport two hours ahead just to get through the check-in lines and security, another half hour on top of it to get claimed luggage is nothing now. It used to be an inconvience when you could show up at the airport 45 minutes prior to departure and zoom through to the gate, get on board, leave, and get off at the other end. For the short term future air travel can function in this matter, but by next summer, there better be some for appropriate solutions applied to restore the convience to air travel.

Btw, Northwest in DTW must have one of the slowest baggage claims, you can make the mile-long trek in from the end of C concourse and still wait another 30 minutes for your luggage to pop out on a completely different carosel than the one listed on the monitors. We're talking a good 45min-hour wait after arrival here for luggage, even DEN is faster!!
Oh yeah, and last Friday, with a good 45 min. wait for security at the main checkpoint, they still had one of the checkpoint lanes closed!!! Yeah, sure it wasn't busy enough. The airport was as busy as it ever was. A tip for DTW travelers, if flying NW, go through the checkpoints at the international check-in, the hotel, or through the Smith terminal, no lines!!, compared to the bottleneck in the NW terminal.

Also, going in and out of South America will become almost impossible. Not only is the cargo area FULL to the rim with bags, but the cabin is too. Less cargo?

People should be able to just travel with 1 bag. I as many other airline employees do travel with just a carryon since if we check a bag and it gets lost we are just out of luck. I went to Australia in the spring for 18 days and I got everything I needed in my carry on. People just need to stop packing everything they own.

Ewrvirgin, I don't agree when you say 1 carry on only will reduce the length of the security lines.
I flew from MEM Sept. 15. They did open all the checked luggage and search by hand.
1) It takes a lot of time
2) It is inefficient. X-rays machines are better than people to detect explosive, that can be a part of the luggage itself . And the main risk with checked luggage is explosives ....
3) They only scanned my carry on (and that was much quicker)

AWA22, this time, I do not agree with you. Whe you travel for fun, and to a sunny country, everything pack in a carry on is ok.
When it's a 2-3 weeks bizz trip in an EUropean country in January, you need more (pullover instead of T-shirts, laptop, documents, books, ... It is heavy and takes space)

And, by the way, if you are not using an electric shaver, you will have to check you carry on.
