Status Of The NW And DL DC-9s In MZJ

What's the latest on the DC9-30s and 40s that were retired by Northwest over the years? There have been recent pictures uploaded to the database showing some of them from a few years ago, with some parts looking to be missing. How many are there still left in MZJ? Are they stored or now starting to be scrapped?

Then there are the DC9-50s that DL retired. These appear to be in stored condition. There were rumors about them going to PAWA. Any new information? And what is up with the DC-9s that went to Blythville, Arkansas?

Back in January 2013 when I was last at Marana there were only 11 Northwest DC9s left. Around six more had been very recently scrapped at that time. I believe a few of the Delta DC9-50s there have been parted out now as well.

I would also be interested in knowing more about the scrapping operation at Blytheville - is this run by Delta? It is quite surprising that there isn't better coverage of the storage fields in the US, they are fascinating places.

I last visited there in January of this year and there was one that had all of its pain stripped and was parked by one of the hangars. There was another one parked over by the Evergreen 747s and it was about to be scrapped. In general things are not looking good for the DC-9s or the DL 757s. I do not have a regs for the DC-9s I saw as I was not able to get quite close enough. Hope that helps.

Anyone know how many ex-Northwest Airplanes they have scrapped at MZJ? Basically all of the 747-200s, a good chunk of DC-10-30s, and dozens of DC-9s have been stored there and to my knowledge never flew away. MZJ for Northwest was like Lancaster Fox Field was in the late-60s and early-70s for so many DC-6s, DC-7s, and Connies. California Airmotive demolished about half the heavy prop fleet in the country.

What were people supposed to do exactly? They are old planes, about to be destroyed. They served their purpose and everybody moves on.

It did make the paper, but again, what did you expect, columns wailing about the loss of the DC-9 from American skies and a daily parting out update from CNN? This doesn't qualify as news to the exceedingly vast majority of people including me, a guy with well over 3,000 hours in the DC-9. It was a great old plane, but I'm glad I don't fly it anymore.   

Nobody's being disrespectful, it's just not very newsworthy. Fortunately if you are that passionate about the subject there's always a.net!

For many years NW sent aircraft to Greenville, Mississippi for scrapping to a company called Memphis something-or-other an was rumored to be at least partially owned by Gary Wilson, then one of the leadership at NW. Numerous DC-10's and B727 were scrapped there. One captain told me that he flew a DC-10-40 into Greenville and before he could pick up his flight bag to get off the plane, crews were already on board stripping out valuable components. Then all the engines were pulled and trucked back to MSP for the next ferry flight into oblivion.

It was called the Memphis Group. ONLY aviation buffs care about the demise of the DC-9 or any other aircraft. My biggest grip is that Delta is keeping one DC-9-50 for their museum and kept an aircraft that originally flew for Austrian Airlines. They should have kept one that was bought new by North Central Airlines. One ex NCA DC-9-50 was donated to a museum in the Carolinas. The The same museum that has the A320 that ditched into the Hudson River.The average person only has an interest in an aircraft when they are flying and are they going to get a seat on it for the least amount of money and will it fly away and not leave them behind.

Is there anybody on A.net who lives near Blythville that has snapped some pics of those 9s there?

There was actually some recent pics (ie 2014) of Greenville where several of the NW 727s and DC-10-40s still there, slowly having parts pulled. There was even a few 741s with one in the old NW livery before the bowling shoe.

And when will N675MC be going to the museum? Are they tidying it up before putting it on display? My guess is that they chose it because it has been with so many airlines.

It is still sitting on the ramp in front of the TOC with no engines. The museum is still under going work so I don't suspect it will be moved until the completion date nears. I think that is some time this summer. I know they have moved some of the aircraft back inside and will give limited tours at an employee party in May. There is also a 757 that is being prepped for the museum as well as some engines and a DC9 tail for display.

On airliners.net, I have to interpret this as sarcasm. I'm fairly certain there is no DC-9 news that's not fit to print here, especially if you count the MDs and 717s.

Oops. My typo. I Google-Earthed Blytheville and I could not find any airplanes that appeared to be stored or being parted out but then you can never really be sure how old those satellite shots really are.

The DC-10-40's went to Mississippi for dismantling. The DC-10-30's wound up in Marana or Mojave. I miss the old war horse.

I believe the following did not go to MZJ, which is where most of the 30s went: N220NW, N228NW went to MXE (was this the first D10-30 retired?) N229NW went to OPF, and N236NW went to TUL as an OMNI parts donor.

I do not know where N211NW went (BTW, does anybody know why the registration is so far out of sequence?)

All the ex-SAS MD-8X aircraft that DL purchased for cannibalization went to Blytheville for dis-assembly. There are also some MD-90s that went there for the same fate, I am unsure of their origin.

They've moved it over around the corner in front of bay 11. They remounted some engines on it last week (I'm assuming they're timed out copies) and it is just sitting quietly for the moment. I am guessing it will be moved across the street before the May 17 Delta employee party.

I forgot about Maxton. IIRC some of the old NW 747's went there, too. I was driving to Charlotte one day and almost drove off the road when I saw those red tails sitting in the middle of nowhere.

To be honest, once I knew that the "last flight" (#2014) wasn't going to be the "last flight", I didn't care as much about getting a trip report in. I still may do it though. I just don't have time right now. I'm surprised there wasn't more from the rest of the fans though.

603 and 606 are still there last I knew. I missed my chance at seeing 601 years ago. Didn't take the time to go over from Charlotte. Kick myself now. Seeing the nose in the Smithsonian isn't the same.
