Have you seen the Congress lately? Is anything simple? Seriously, if the DOJ relies on Congress for remedies, the risk is the final result will not be of the DOJ's liking at all, what with rewrites and amendments...

When American and the DOJ agreed on giving up the DAL gates, I don't think that the DOJ envisioned that it could lead to Virgin leaving DFW and reduce competition at DFW, so I don't think anyone is purposefully increasing concentration.
That said, the reason I think the DOJ's move makes sense is it increases competition for more passengers.
DFW may be in the middle of the Metroplex, but there is much more O/D traffic to/from Dallas than Ft Worth so increasing options from DAL give more people an alternative that is closer to their actual O/D. In turn, the new entrant doesn't even to compete on price alone, in fact it could even try and charge a premium for the convenience of being closer.
The way I see it, the new entrant gets to compete on more than just price, which makes it a real alternative, and more likely to succeed than if the new flights were at DFW.
The losers are the passengers West of DFW, but not everyone can win.
Either way, I simply don't think there are any meaningful remedy that the DOJ could have gotten out of American at DFW.

The problem with a new entrant to DAL is that no matter where they fly, they will be going head to head with the long established and loyal customer base of WN there.
It is really an uphill battle for anyone to be starting routes out there when you will have such a small operation compared to WN. But I am like a lot of folks that believe that WN had to endure the Wright Amendment all these years and then all of the sudden now that it will lift, another airline can come in and pick the free, fresh fruit of Dallas Love Field. Doesn't seem fair.
And please don't let this drag on into something off topic about WN getting this and WN getting that. I am just soley talking about what is going on in DAL. That's it.
Gotta give credit where credit is due to WN - as this type of petition is similar that AA/US did - prior to their merger - so each airline, whether it be AA, WN, or others - hits up the marketing spiel and gains recognition and awareness in such programs.
Looked at the website and letter, and the only thing that I have a contention with is its reference that Dallas Love Field is a world class airport - really??? Out of all the airports in the world, as many of you can attest on A.net - hands down that DAL would not show up in Top 10, or anywhere near that. Gotta give it to WN for trying though and trying to convince people that DAL is a world class airport, which it is not.
Will be interesting to see how all this pans out - no matter now much the City of Dallas is involved, or thinks they are involved - the DOJ will have their say and at some point in near future, decision to be made and dust will settle and we can move on to another subject.

Have you been to DAL in the past year? It is not even close to the same airport/terminal that it was. I visit various airports weekly and can say there is not .02 cents worth of difference in any of the new terminals. Some larger/some smaller but overall the same. DAL has some new decent places to eat (really I have tried most), nice little stores. It is incredibly bright and happy. Easy to transit. Once it is completed and the last 3 1960s gates are removed it will be equal to any airport in the states, just not as large. JMO.
Thanks for the comments - yea, have been to DAL several times as I live in the DFW Metroplex - admit the new terminal is world's of difference from the 'old' Love Field terminal - and is a nice terminal overall - just the interpretation of 'world class' guess takes different meaning for different people. Agreed - as have lived here for a while now - definitely a major upgrade from the previous terminal.
