Perhaps there are shopping at the same store as PeoplEXPRESS. We have to see anything substantive from that start-up. As for the name, I look back nostalgically at the old Eastern Airlines and wish it never went away however time marches on and younger travelers have no connection with that name or its history.

Their web site is full of old Eastern imagery and the New Aircraft link has a drawing of an A319 in very familiar colors.

We used to fly Eastern every summer when I was a little kid from Philadelphia to Miami. One of my memories (this would be 1986 or 1987 or so) is playing hide-and-seek with my sister in a widebody but there weren't very many other passengers. I'm guessing this would have been an L-1011.

We also got to see the cockpit. This might have been a different flight but the captain gave each of us wings. I think my mother still has the wings somewhere, I'll have to ask her. Kids don't get to do that now!

They obviously don't remember - or are conveniently forgetting - the old WHEAL (We Hate Eastern Air Lines) club that was started by a couple of disgruntled PHL passengers in the 50's.

That being said, I grew up in the Boston area and flew Eastern dozens of times in my younger days and right up until the end in '91. Glad to hear they plan to keep the old Caribbean Blue/Ionosphere Blue hockey stick livery. Hope these guys can recreate some of that old magic.

That was precisely my reaction. Like the re-incarnations of Pan Am, this upstart would have the flying public believe there is a direct linage all the way back to the days of Eddie Rickenbacker and Captain Dick Merrill. I wish them all the luck, but the only link between them is a logo and nostalgia.

Yes there was indeed a C919 model painted in the EA colours. I seriously doubt though that the carrier would select this model. Appears from their website (easternairlines.aero) that they are trying to start with the Airbus 319. It appears that they are working with Airbus and Amadeus.

The Big Four was actually UA, AA, EA, and WA Transworld Airlines (USA)">TW. DL (and CO) didn't join the ranks until the late 1980s when it became the Big Six, with DL joining thanks to the WA merger and CO joining because of the Lorenzo-era mashup of mergers. Shortly before EA collapsed, US (fresh from the PI merger growth) took EA's place on the Big Six totem pole.

PA was never a Big Four carrier as it was prohibited from flying domestic pax until the NA merger - and even then, PA had a token domestic presence.

Or be economical like Delta and shop around for some good priced used aircraft. As NW proved with their DC-9s, you can always refresh the interior of an aircraft. it seems smart to keep capital cost low with an upstart, especially one that will start out with a charter operation.

But Eastern wasn't the original operator. That aircraft was originally delivered to Allegheny Airlines in 1975 as N920VJ. Sold to Eastern in 1978.

I believe you might be thinking of the ARJ21 - the 919 looks more like a 737/A320

It does have legroom, galleys equipped to serve hot meals to all passengers, and a lounge. These factors will help EA differentiate themselves from the competition.

When a buddy of mine interviewed for a pilot job at Airtran, they asked him if he had any other questions. Yes, he apparently said. "Do you still give us wings to hand out to the kids?" The answer was "absolutely", and he got the job.

Don't think that was ever the case. For many years UA was the largest airline in the "free world" (meaning, other than Aeroflot) in terms of passengers carried, and that was when UA was strictly domestic (except SEA-YVR).

Somebody in the industry down here told me they are getting 4 737Ngs. Wonder if it will happen. There has been some buzz about them lately. Will be interesting to see what occurs in the next 6 months or so.

Didn't mention anything about the *original* owner. Just highlighting that it carried an EA registration all the way to the desert.
