Rumor: Cathay To Keep 11 Of 12 Remaining B744

Rumor in HKG is that Cathay have shelved plans to retire the last 11 of 12 B744s in the fleet.

5 -400s scheduled for retirement in 2014, 1 already gone, the 4 other are to stay now.

11 of the 12 744s in the fleet have the new F and J seat color schemes and have premium Y cabins added.

Starting September 2014 they will be flying only short and medium haul from HKG and will remain in the fleet until the arrival of the A350 and B779.

Safe to say that CX will not be going with a interim 747-8i solution.

That's pretty incredible. That means these will be in service up to 2020. The oldest is 25 years old at the moment, and a mixture of RR and PW.

Not true. I just asked the fleet planning manager about this rumour this morning. The original 747 retirement plan still stands. The 777 delivery schedule has been accelerated slightly.

I wouldn't give much credit to these rumors.
Many people were convinced CX would get the 748i and that rumor was running around quite a lot as well.

That being said, the 744s are useful on the regional network.

Judging from the flight hour records of retired CX-744s B-HOP must have passed 120.000 flight hours by now (B-HOO clocked 103.000 hours in 21 years).

In Cathay's route map what qualifies as Medium Haul ? Australia, India, Dubai, Qatar or only Tokyo or Seoul ?

The issue wouldn't be that, but more of a case of a non standard product. Australia, India and the Middle East are just about completely served with non-regional A333s (reverse herringbone Cirrus J product and new Y). The (re-)introduction of the 744 to these places wouldn't be a good look, seeing that there's a world of a difference between the two hard products. I don't understand why they would suddenly decide to keep them as they've accelerated the disposal of the 744 fleet and I also believe that the 77Ws are still replacing them on a rate of about one for one.



It's all about the destination AND the journey.
