I always thought one of the reasons behind such subsidiaries in Japan was to allow the major carriers reduce labor and operational cost, and also allow the companies to independently grow by seeking out their own business activities which mainline might not be capable to focus on.

Does anyone have a break down of current operating flying JAL subsidiaries? Is JALways still in existence? Sometimes I recognise the need form a labour standpoint, but as the above poster highlighted unless there are major service level difference it just serves to blurt and confuse the primary brand and branding.
Perhaps as it grew, there was duplication of admin, and operational components between JL and JALexpress- it's come a full circle and will now be reintegrated
