After 66 years, World Airways will close the doors as of 5 pm today. I am sure that there will be more details, but I wanted to wish ll of my friends and former colleagues the best of luck. It has been painful to watch a once proud airline be raped and pillaged of it's pride and standing in the industry.

Yup, suppose the BK court hearing regarding auctioning off the company on Tuesday did not go well. Suspect there was not enough interest, or if so no bidder was willing to cover the minimum $35million required to repay Cerberus.

Here is the news story

BREAKING: World Airways Immediately Shutting Down

CEO says company will cease operations immediately, and North American Airlines will see "significant reductions".

As a resident of Peachtree City where the airline is HDQ, I just hate to see this for the employees with its long and rich history. My best to all of those at World!

Although it's not a total surprise for me since they were shrinking these last few years, it's still sad to see an airline with such a history to simply vanish.

how sad is this! This was the oldest charter airline in existence. I worked for World Airways as a gate agent back in the early 80's at the West Imperial Terminal LAX when we operated a bunch of scheduled service.

I am kind of shocked that they would close so quickly... But I am not shocked that they are closing.

I wish the best to the employees and crews of World Airways, and hope they have luck in their future ventures.

Sad news indeed. I was really rooting for their post-deregulation scheduled service. Such an interesting period in the USA with new airlines popping up every month it seemed and the former "Supplementals" all taking a stab at scheduled ops. World had a nice little network for awhile stretching from HNL to FRA and points in between. Didn't have the resources to withstand the bloodbath and build a sustainable route system.

Best wishes to the employees of this storied airline.

Oh dear.... been through this three times in my career already (yeah..... I know...). It is not a nice feeling, and typically you'll have been left without pay for the month (or part of the month) in a sudden shutdown like this.

My sympathies to all involved: your aircraft were a very familiar sight here in Ireland, and I hope you all find work very soon.

They really loved supporting the troops and taking care of them to and from!

Hi, my experience (and the friends that have messaged me frantically about this) was: incredibly courteous staff (all of them), good food (for airline food...lol), and drinks, and always making sure that they vocalized how much they appreciated our service! I don't ever remember one of them with out a smile on their faces!

Too bad. Only flew them once in August 1980. DC-10 HNL-LAX. Naturally red-eye, and was the second most miserable flight for me, but only due to dealing with allergies from carnation leis we were bringing back from HI!
Really enjoyed the trip overall and was my second DC-10 trip. (First was CO -10 over.)
Biggest disappointment: As a schedule collector, I had grabbed a few odd-for-me-at-the-time schedules (China Air Lines especially), and naturally left them in the seatback pocket upon arrival. Loved using the stairs at LAX WIT though. Seemed a lot of plane for terminal of that size lol.
Good luck to WO folks.

I flew with them in scheduled service on a DC-10 from Baltimore to Newark. It was the same DC-10 that later crashed in Boston. The only gripe I had with them was the 3-4-3 seating.
