AXA financial, a large French financier, has owned a large chunk of UAL corporation stock for awhile. AXA finances much of UAL's airbus purchases. It holds significant influence over UAL's Board of Directors.
What's more interesting is that AXA has recently increased its share of CAL stock to 16%...

The only Airbuses United operates are the A319 and A320. It was a surprising order, because United has always been a large 737 customer. Had the 737NG been offered a few years earlier, UAL would have ordered that.
