Ever since the letter that Goodwin sent out to all UA employees leaked out, the fate of UA now looks quite negative.
As you all know, DEN is UA's second largest hub, and is very close behind ORD.
Some facts about DEN:
1. Its the 10th busiest airport in the world.
2. Its the 2nd largest airport in the world in terms of acreage and the largest in the US.
3. Its the most expensive airport in the US.
4. 80% of DEN is UA.
5. UA has 60 gates in DEN, a whole concourse plus a little of another.
6. Its UA's gateway to the midwest-west
7. Its outgrown itself in just 5 years.
8. There is not a single empty gate left.
If UA does indeed belly up, DEN will become a ghost airport, and all of the facts I mentioned above will become facts of the past. DEN would become a ghost airport.
I really hope UA doesn't go under as they are my prefered airline to fly in the US, and have had many great experiences.
However, as I said 80% of DEN is UA. Without UA, DEN will drop by 80% in terms of operations.
What do you think will be the future of DEN if UA does indeed belly up? ORD is not a huge issue as it is already heavily served by other airlines and is a hub for AA.
Ever since Goodwin announced this, there have been a lot of rumors going around about CO or DL acquiring the DEN hub.
DL, I can't really see as they have a hub in SLC.
CO I can see since DEN was one of there hubs in the past.
However these are rumors and are most probably not true.
I think its a bit too early to begin to speculate.
So what do you all think will be the future of DEN if UA indeed does belly up? Do you think its hub will be picked up by another major carrier? Or will DEN remain a ghost airport?

Bear in mind that a substantial percentage (40 percent?) of Denver's traffic is O&D, so if United were to cease operations there would be a huge vacuum to fill. If that were to happen, first off Frontier just won the lottery. Expect to see them expand as fast as they can afford to, probably snapping up some of UA's now-surplus A319/320s and maybe even 737s. Probably most of the other carriers would add extra flights to their hubs. It takes a while to set up a hub.
Maybe USAirways would finally get a hub in the western US. Hey, they already have a concourse full of Stephen Wolf style grey - no need to change the carpet or ticket counters!

Trust me. If UA files for bankruptcy, and ceases operation, you willl see increased service by many carriers. Granted, another carrier may not make DEN a large hub as UA did, but the vaccuum will be filled.

I'm sure Frontier is licking their chops at the prospect of UA going under. Of course, I don't think they are hoping for it, but it would certainly give a Frontier a HUGE boost... #1 being able to use UA's old gates, #2 UA has a somewhat similar fleet (737s and A319/320s) that they would be able to get secondhand. Frontier won't fill up DEN like UA does, but I'm sure somebody will pick up the slack.

I will agree with Us330. If(emphasis on if) United does go down, I don't think you will see another carrier ever be as dominant at Denver as United was. I do think though, that the void will be filled, largely by Frontier, and possibly 3 or 4 other airlines.
This might also be Frontiers' chance to get even bigger and possibly move to concourse B. If Frontier keeps expanding, it might make DEN a low-fare hub. True, DEN does have higher gate costs, but if Frontier really expands, you could see prices slashed.

Remember, the UA dooms-day letter has much to do with union negotiations and UA getting its costs under control. While it is an extremely difficult time for the airlines, and UA seems to be having a more difficult time than most, they will be around for a long time to come even if they have to reorganize under the bankruptcy code at some point.

Regarding DEN being the most expensive airport in the USA to operate out of, I was reading an article about the opening of DEN in Airways magazine, I believe it was an issue from 1995... the article stated that DEN had the second-highest per passenger cost after JFK.
